I recommend starting with a soapy finger in the shower. Just the thought of deliberately taking a foreign object and trying to insert it was enough to make me start tensing up immediately. But hey, you're already in the shower, the water's warm, you're soapy, your hand is down there anyway, what the hell... You can start with one finger and then work up to more as your comfort level increases. I think using a finger helps you become more aware of your own anatomy also. Having an experienced partner that you can TRUST is paramount also.
