Have you ever thought of making some kind of BDSM business? Probably would only work if you were a dominant (male or female), a female might be more successful but only if she has a sophisticated intellect and unique ability? What do you think?

I think Dominant or submissive wouldn't matter. Running a BDSM oriented business is running a business. Some people are better for that then others, regardless of which side of the leash they happen to be on. Or what their sex is for that matter.

I've definitely thought about it, as a side business venture. It's not what most people are thinking.

I have the coolest purse on the planet. It's the foot portion of a high heeled boot with chains that basically make the purse strings. While I've seen some that come close to it, none have quite compared to it. I'm constantly asked where I got it and had people interested in getting one of their own. There's no doubt in My mind that if I could replicate it, there would be a nice source of additional income in it for Me.

Of course, Me being Me, I'd love to be some kind of paid party planner for kink events. I think it would be a blast.

If a female would only be successful at it if she had sophisticated intellect and unique ability.. what would a man need?
And as someone who is both submissive and has had my own business I can tell that success is not limited to dominants.

Ignoring the more inflammatory parts of the OP, running any kind of business requires business know-how . . . . It's a lot harder than it looks. I've dabbled a little in starting a BDSM business, & it is not some kinda magical money maker, tho' it's easy to get that impression from the outside . . ...

Just as with any business, it's very helpful to put together a business plan, to do adequate prep work in terms of knowing what the potential market is, what the competition is doing, & to understand very conservatively & pragmatically exactly how the money stream is gonna flow. Lots of people have lots of fanciful notions about making money but it's rare to see anything substantive come of those ideas . .. .

Yes I did run a BDSM business for two years.
It was popular and well received by the BDSM community but it was a huge amount of work with enormouse outgoings of money and the return never much more than payed for the costs.
People seemed to get the impression I was making a fortune but the fact is I would of made more money packing shelves in a supermarket.

As with all businesses, there are two sides to it. There is the product/service itself and how to provide it, and then there are the "business" things common to all businesses - the marketing, sales, accounting, etc.

It's interesting to speculate on orientation. I suspect that being a sub or Dom would not have much influence if it's a one person business, but wonder if a sub might feel uncomfortable if it was a larger company that required him/her to oversee others.

The Entrepreneur's Manual, by White, contains a vignette about the origins of the dildo. It was something that a few chemists created in their off hours. It cost a few pennies to make and sold for almost fifteen dollars. There's a helluva markup in the BDSM/toys industry.

I think if you can come up with a product that is unique, can be used in the general sex industry as well as the BDSM one, then you may be onto a winner.
I know so many people that make all the normal stuff like floggers, canes and leather goods thinking they are going to make a killing but end up just being hobbyists.
My X partner used to make dungeon furniture and he sold and hired it out on a regular basis but he still had to have a full time day job because even though his stuff was popular, there just wasn't a big enough market for it.
One of the things I would be interested in involving myself in is metal sculpture art work that would fit into our home without funny looks from friends and relatives and yet could double up as torture devices

Any good blacksmiths on here?

I have two business interests which are BDSM related. Firstly a part of my core element in my Counselling/Therapy Practice is aimed towards the BDSM Community. Secondly at this time I custom make floggers mostly with hand carved wooden handles, but intend (When I get a forge working) making custom shackles and collard from Damascus" Steel (also made by me) and iron chain links forged for each job. Later I'll be looking at some items from stainless steel as well (Will depend on access to a flow jet cutting machine.)

I have several friends who have bdsm businesses. Not all are dominant either OP. They vend their wares at bdsm and leather events across the country and have websites as well they sell from.

HUH????? Scratching head re: "only if you were a dominant etc." Why is that? i don't think what side of the kneel one is on or being female has anything to do with a successful business, BDSM or otherwise.

I think if someone has good business sense, then they might make a go of it. I don't see that it has anything to do with gender or which side of the whip they are on.
