I believe in what Umberto Eco and other Semioticians say, and level at us as a Cardinal Law of Semiotics:

The audience decides and defines.

he moment you show ANYTHING you've done to ANYONE else, you have an audience.  You relinquinsh the right to claim "art for art's sake".

art for art's sake is bullshit the moment you feel the emotional need to share it or show it and get a positive reaction from someone.

By your definition, I reckon we might be d'accord.

but your definition leaves out wankerous 20 somethings that just regurgitate what came down the pike for the past 4 or so years so they can get some media related gig or some airplay on alternative radio.

To use the arguably more common and generic definition of creativity... the one where an artist's expression is made to publicly display for profit or other motivation, such as for the purpose of garnering the opinions of others... then I would definitely agree with you.

If I were to cobble together a musical composition by arranging tracks of pre-recorded instrument loops, would that be considered my work of art, knowing that I do not have the skills necessary to play any of those instruments at all? Would it be considered musical art at all? Does my knowing how to use multitrack recording software to mix and process tracks negate the fact that I have absofragginlutely no talent in the playing of those instruments? Personally, I don't think it's art... just another technical exercise in keeping my mixing chops up to par.

Then again, perhaps someone else feels that my exercise is worthy to be called art?

right there, if the loops were from the work of others, not you?

the answer is NO.

Samplers are parasites, not artists, period.

Fast reply without reading the thread...

The creative drive is not divinity, rather it is the desire to immitate the Divine. The Divine exists within all of us, and it inspires us daily, some to a greater degree than others. It is not that the divine "speaks" to these people more, they simply hear its call more clearly. This spark of the divine within us inspires a desire to be divine ourselves, to be subcreators (anybody who has been DM in a D&D game knows the thrill of subcreation). It is an atempt to be one with the divine within each of us that drives us all to create in our own limited realm.

A reply in general ;

That is what I like about this forum, when anything  artistic is discussed, there is always a good conversation to be had, and the creation of food for thought, it is why I bring topics here.

My personal belief, kinky people are likely to be creative people, because let's face it kink is adult games, games where creativity wins. It is in my limited experience that those I come to know in kink are largely artistic types, they have a personal creative process they engage in outside of their kink and as artistic types, they have learned to be expressive in areas of their life they feel creative. Perhaps even kinky folk have learned, or are by nature a bit more advanced from the norm, but then perhaps the norm really is about people who have not learned to be free, free to express themselves as a creative creature.
