I did some research on my own, but without hearing from people who actually live in Ireland and Europe, I can't really see the full scope of reality.

It's cheaper, just as good and far more rewarding just to get a job and rent a studio in a district with a lot of artists than going to college. You will learn more both about art, life and the difficult world you want to exist in. You are never told at art college that once you leave, if you have no contacts, you are pretty well fucked. Get into a scene, most capitals have one, there you will learn the reality of life for the majority of artists. Near on zilch % make a living out of their art, some teach, some do commercial work, some are good form fillers and get by on public art funding. I wish someone advised me to skip art college and get a studio in an arts district, network, find contacts and promote myself.

But then, if that piece of paper is more important than art, go to college. I've used my BA and Masters for just about every job I've ever had but its never been of use to me in pursuing art as a living. Berlin's Mitte district is thriving or get a squat or cheap room in Kreusberg. Paris has a similar district but you would need to look that up. London has Hackney (I think its still gouing strong). Berlin's for me, the place is a cauldron of creativity at the moment, even with the recession but there in lies the problem, earning a living is difficult but the place is cheap and artists get by one way or another. It just takjes the guts to go for it.

The most important thing is to mix with artists, discuss art, experiment and find you own subject, your own dialog. College delays that. You go to college and you are still left with finding your own subject and dialog after you have left. But as I said, if it is the degree you're after, why bother with a fine art degree, there are much better and practically more helpful ones in terms of future employment to spend your time pursuing.
