Today, Al Franken the recently swore in Juinor Senator from Minn.had his turn at Sotomayor....he did pretty good, certainly he confirmed his liberal credentials in his line of questioning.
He closed his time by asking Judge Sotomayor which episode it was that Perry Mason actually had lost the case.....seems little Al and Sonia both shared an afinity for Perry Mason ....neither cold name the episode...though both agreed it happened only once during the shows run..

Did you see on CNN when they showed an old SNL clip of Franken as a Senator questioning Clarence Thomas in a skit?

Funny to see it become reality.

Can anyone here tell me how Al Franken is suddenly qualified to decide who our next Supreme Court justice is. He's up there trying to crack a joke that isn't really funny...

Easy.  He was elected as a United States Senator under the revised rules for how we get our Senators.  Very much the same sort of principles that allow someone who has never run anything to be elected President.

Get over it, and get active figuring out how to fire them in '14 and '12 respectively.

What are those revised rules?  As I recall we have had everyone from basketball players, baseball players, astronauts, musicians and many others with no prior experience in government elected to Congress.

And I see we are still beating the same tired "executive experience" drum.

Refresh my memory, what were McCain's qualifications again based on your principles?

I think he is referring to the 17th amendment.

Who cares under what rule he was elected...he was elected. and while I do not agree with his published opinions on many things (He's to far to the right for me...or left, that depends on how you define classical Liberalism mixed with rational anarchy and a hefty dose of libertarianism)  the fact that an established media commentator is now in the driver's seat means he must now either stick to his guns or find a way to justify the inevitable compromises.

Mike, if I was somehow going to get involved in amending the U.S. Constitution, a repeal of the 17th would not be anywhere near the top of the list.  Probably not even on it.

Really, the only reason I phrased it the way I did to begin with was because if I had said "elected as provided by the Constitution" somebody would have snarked about the 17th.

I'm not sure I understand the problem though.Servant asked a particularly silly question, that of Franken's qualifications....the correct answer would have been....He was elected by the good people of Minnesota...end of story.Revisions in the Constitution have nothing to do with it,every Senator is elected the same way.....even Sessions.

When a panel of judges say that a liberal democrat won the election, thats ok. When the Supreme Court decided that George Bush won an election, he stole it...Another double standard.

...actually there's a single standard. It's called counting all the votes.

Pardon?

In one case one panel of judges prevented all votes from being counted. That's completely unacceptable.

In the other case the count was carefully conducted and all the time needed was taken to verify the result. The panel of judges simply confirmed that the result was fair and the count completed. A completely acceptable action.
