SamVimes -> Electrical Switch needed (7/15/2009 10:54:10 PM)

I am looking for a digital timer/switch that will turn on and off at random intervals from 1sec to 10 min. (or more).  I want to plug the magic wand in it so it can torture my wife while I do other things.  Any suggestions?

you may want to do a google search on random interval timers to find products like this:

not sure this one gives you the range/flexibility you are looking for, but the search will get you into the right ballpark.

I'm extremely interested in this one!

You might want to be careful about saying things like "so it can torture my wife while I do other things".  It implies you will not be in the room with her at the time, and holy smokes you don't want to open that can of worms.

Only if someone is too presumptuous to not realize the myriad of other things that can be done with two hands free.

I  have seen timers like that in specialty christmas shops. they are mainly used to handle strings of lights and go by some melody. But this isn't a good time of year to find them.

Also if X10 is stil around they used to have a remote starter kit, which had an rs232 connection. And there is software floating around that has random timers for that set up to do christmas lights.

If you are unable to find what you want, a possible alternative might be a murcury switsh, motion activated. It could be very  usefull in predicament bondage.

Solid state relay hanging off an old parallel port or serial port?

Low end Atmel microcontroller (no crystal) with transistor and relay or solid state relay?

JFET input operational amplifier, 555 timer (set to minimum interval), and a short antenna to make noise?  For fun you could use the person as the noise source.

Really the parallel port or serial port would make this really easy.  A second runner up would be a USB control board on a PC.

Could also use a USB to serial or parallel converter.

Do you need to adjust the maximum and minimum interval?
If you do, you could use 2 potentiometers, 2 rotary shaft encoders, or 2 rotary BCD/binary switches (this limits your adjustments to 9-16 positions).
Course you could just press a button over and over to increment up or down.

If all else fails, drop me a line...this isn't a hard thing to set up.
