Marc, I read a lot of online news sites, & I frequently skim thru the comments, another kind of online forum. & while the CM users might not be 100% or 90%, or whatever, accepting & tolerant, they are way more tolerant & accepting than many of those who post to those comment sections on the news sites. & I include sites such as the NYTimes, where the flamewars can be pretty harsh, & the commentary mean & knee-jerk & seriously lacking in both knowledge & empathy . . . . . . Personally, I suspect that if this was a forum for Christian fundies it would be a gazillion times more condemnatory & harshly judgmental . .. . . . Because kinksters are not more purely accepting than your ideal doesn't mean they're not more tolerant than society at large . . . . . Another example is that I live in Northern Cali, in a bastion of hippie liberalness, & the lefties can be bizarrely intolerant despite my expectations that they should be exemplars of acceptance. The conclusion I tend to draw is that humans are a contradictory & complex species, especially when it comes to social behaviors & attitudes . . . . . . &, you don't cruise the General forum, or at least you don't seem to post there, so did you miss the very recent thread on 'Public BDSM' where one side of the argument wanted the culture at large to be more tolerant of 'mild' BDSM practices? All while elucidating the pissant 'vanilla' stuff that offended them, offered up as some kinda justification why 'nillas should have to take s-types being walked on leashes by D or M types with equanimity . . . . That one was truly amusing . . . . .

Oh believe me, I know that humans are contradictory and I've come to expect hypocricy from them (myself included). Still, I find it amusing to find intolerance practiced (often unknowingly) by those who preach tolerance. The hatred and intolerance of the Left is particularly troubling to me - I expect it from the right (well, the far right anyway) but the left should know better. The same goes for the kink community. Look I'm not standing on a mountain top preaching moral values or good taste to people. I just find humor in the notion that people who like kinky sex will get bent out of shape by a picture of kinky sex. That people who like to dress in skimpy leather outfits and paddle each other's ass suddenly - because of one pic - turn into Southern Belles. "Oh my delicate senseabilities! I do believe I am getting the vapors!" C'mon, folks, lighten up a little!

First, that people would be shocked to see such a picture on a BDSM web site. As I see it, it’s kind of like being shocked to see a picture of a clay pot on a pottery web site. The second is that a sub-culture (BDSMers) who know ourselves to be victims of intolerance by society at large (which, at best will portray us as weird and/or a joke) and despised by many other subcultures (e.g. Christian Fundamentalists) who would like nothing more than to censor and legislate us into “behaving and believing properly,” displaying similar intolerances. You don’t have to like the picture and I’m not disputing anyone’s right to voice their opinion on it. I just would like people to be aware that they are not really so different than those they often hold in contempt for being intolerant.

There is a time and place for everything - and maybe a public place where others may be less tolerant, where there may be children about, and where there may be public obsenity laws in play - isn't the time or place to be accessing a website about a kinky lifestlye (you know, the kind a website for people who like to be naked or wear skimpy clothing while tying each other up, hitting each other with things, and inserting objects into various orifices). But that's just me. If you like living dangerously...
