"And that's the way it is..."

What a loss.  He was as big a part of my growing up years as my dad was, just as wise, seemed to be a genuinely nice guy.  He gave not to many of those around today.With very few exceptions his listeners never knew how he felt about anything -- too bad there's not more of that in today's journalists.

This saddens me.
I have not yet seen confirmation except to say he was gravely ill.

I have a fondness for him. The very first tv show that I fell in love with was The Twentieth Century. It went off the air when I was five.

I loved when he smiled or was having fun on air. So sad, but he lived a long and seemingly happy life.  He was a rare one for sure!

A rare newsman..from a time that doesn't happen any more. News is replaced by powder puff pieces, fluffy anchors, and nobody that you felt you could really trust like Walter Cronkite.

Rest in peace..

I thought he passed away many years ago.   hmm.

servantforuse -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/17/2009 7:34:58 PM)

He once told Connie Chung that she should just be herself..She did and they kicked her off the network..

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/17/2009 7:58:02 PM)

I grew up watching him on the CBS evening news. Even as a young child I was mesmerized by his flair for reporting. He will definitely be missed by many.

servantforuse -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/17/2009 8:14:15 PM)

During the Viet Nam war he reported that the 'Tet' offensive was a defeat for U S forces. It was just the opposite. It was a loss for the Viet Cong. He would not get by with a lie like that in todays world. Fair and balanced he was not. He was just the only guy out there.

I grew up listening to Walter Cronkite report how many American servicemen died in South east Asia that day...and yes servant i remember Cronkite's commentary concerning the hopelessness of the conflict.it wasn't a lie...it was an honest evaluation of the situation.We were a fractured society,tearing ourselves apart at home...while the best of a generation died for a war we didn't have the political will to win.Conkrite didn't lie Servant he reported a truth you didn't want to hear.

slvemike4u -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/17/2009 10:02:15 PM)

40 years ago Monday Conkrite told America we had put a man on the moon.......

slvemike4u -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/18/2009 6:42:10 AM)

Why,.....have you died....or is it that you are entertaining the possibility of avoiding that eventuality?

SassySarijane -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/18/2009 7:36:57 AM)

Wow! He was another major and very recognizable voice from my growing up years.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Walter Cronkite died (7/18/2009 8:33:16 AM)

The last trusted man in America.

Interesting trivia note... in the 50s, at the start of his career, Cronkite worked as an anchor for a CBS affiliate in Washington, DC, and hosted a weekly national program called "You Are There." When "You Are There" was canceled by the network in 1957, Cronkite was a little peeved and somewhat concerned about his future. He started shopping around for a new job, and interviewed at an up and coming local affiliate here in the Twin Cities, WCCO-TV, one of the premier televions stations in the country. They made him an offer, which he initially decided to accept, but Edward R. Murrow talked him out of it, telling him that while the Minneapolis job looked attractive in the short term, his long term prospects would be better if he stayed in Washington. Cronkite passed on the offer, stayed in DC, and 5 years later was made anchor of the CBS Evening News. I've always wondered how different his career path would have been if he'd come here instead of sticking it out in Washington.

A one way ticket to palookaville comes to mind Panda....Minnesota being such a hub of world shaking News events.I can see it now Cronkite lagging behind Ted Baxter in the local ratings.....lol
