The last trusted man in America. Interesting trivia note... in the 50s, at the start of his career, Cronkite worked as an anchor for a CBS affiliate in Washington, DC, and hosted a weekly national program called "You Are There." When "You Are There" was canceled by the network in 1957, Cronkite was a little peeved and somewhat concerned about his future. He started shopping around for a new job, and interviewed at an up and coming local affiliate here in the Twin Cities, WCCO-TV, one of the premier televions stations in the country. They made him an offer, which he initially decided to accept, but Edward R. Murrow talked him out of it, telling him that while the Minneapolis job looked attractive in the short term, his long term prospects would be better if he stayed in Washington. Cronkite passed on the offer, stayed in DC, and 5 years later was made anchor of the CBS Evening News. I've always wondered how different his career path would have been if he'd come here instead of sticking it out in Washington.
