It is touching and obviously something he feels strongly about. I have to wonder though, what took him so long?

One of my biggest dislikes of most christian religiouns is the long standing practice of manipulating scripture, even to the point of bastardizing the bible, to repress women.

I like Carter, and think he is a good man. But, as I saw elsewhere online, is it hypocritical of him to do this, while seeming to be supportive of Hamas?

The point for the Southern Baptists, as I understand it, is not so much the wives submit to your husband stuff...  but the role of women in the church.  The Bible is rather restrictive relating to what women can and cannot do in the church (they cannot teach over men, they cannot be a deacon or other position of leadership in the church, etc)... and the Southern Baptist are enforcing that (which is the traditional position of the church) instead of 'going along with' the new tide of women pastors, deacons, etc.

There goes Sunday Brunch.

Since leaving the Presidency, he has tried to push fair elections in Latin America, done work (both PR and carpentry) for Habitat for Humanity, and in general stepped down from his high position as President to be a man who sincerely wants to make the world a better place.  IMO, he's the best ex-President we've ever had.

In reality the tradition for Baptist churches is for each one to function as the conscience of its congregation requires. The SBC is the divergence from Baptist tradition not any thing to do with how women may function in the church.

Not at all.  Here's a snip:

The truth is that male religious leaders have had - and still have - an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world. This is in clear violation not just of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but also the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, Moses and the prophets, Muhammad, and founders of other great religions - all of whom have called for proper and equitable treatment of all the children of God. It is time we had the courage to challenge these views.

I interpret his reference to Muhammad as criticizing Muslims for oppressing women in violation of Muhammad's teachings.  (And the reference to Moses and the prophets as doing likewise for Jews.)  So he is challenging Islam, the religious core of Hamas.

It's too bad people did not realize at the time how good Jimmy Carter was. Unfortunately he wasn't reelected and we ended up with that Neanderthal Ronald Reagan who reversed decades of progress and gave us Al Qaeda in order to defeat the Soviet Union.

Yeah, great catch. Of course Carter claiming that it is "criminal" to not support Hamas tends to offset some bullshit about women's rights under different religions.

Lol. It's obvious you didn't actually live through his presidency. It was a disaster. As bad as his presidency was, who would have thought he would be even more embarrassing as an ex.

It's fairly obvious that if you did live through his presidency you weren't paying attention.

Carter started the mideast peace process. The terrorists and their backers so feared him that they went to great lengths to embarass him and support his opponents. Despite Reagan's spin on the timing of the release anyone able to actually read the negotiated agreement can see that the release of the hostages was delayed to ensure Carter would receive no credit for it.

He started the US on a path to independence from mideast oil, imagine for just a moment if we had continued treating developing alternative energy sources as a national priority.

Carter came to office with absolutely out of control monetary policy and did what was needed to get inflation under control after the disastrous wage and price freeze and oil embargoes. Any honest person studying the leading indicators can see quite clearly that inflation was coming down in the summer of 1980.

Carter is attacked because he was a good man who did the right things and for that certain people hate him and will defame the man's name in any way they think they can get away with.

He took time off from attacking Israel to attack Christianity, at least he is consistent.

Under Carter the US suffered under STAGFLATION with approx. 16% interest rates.
An avowed enemy of the 2nd Amendment.
What's not to like--for the left that is.

BILLY BEER, Billy Carter's shady dealings with Libya. Great bunch.
