Lucylastic -> Journalist & Co to sue Bush & co? (7/20/2009 11:04:30 AM)

An al-Jazeera journalist who was imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay plans to launch a joint legal action with other detainees against former US president George Bush and other administration officials, for the illegal detention and torture he and others suffered at the hands of US authorities.

Good luck with that ...

Lucylastic -> RE: Journalist & Co to sue Bush & co? (7/20/2009 12:43:01 PM)

Ive got nothing to do with it ...neither does luck,
Money, politics and foreign affairs/policy will. I doubt anything will come of it, purely because its who its against.

It will likely result in an international arrest warrant for whoever is eventually criminally charged much as like what happened with Pinochet. So it may be that Bush, Cheney etc. may simply be unable to travel outside the US but the US has extradition treaties with most of Europe so it may come to pass that they all have to hide in secure little spots with neocon judges who won't honor the warrants effectively putting them all under house arrest which is almost acceptable to me.

They can not get anything from  Bush &Co.; it is out of business. US Democrats joy will last until the plaintiffs win and make Obama government pay substantial sums of cash.

You may have missed it when you didn't read the linked article, they intend to file criminal charges against Bush etc. not file a civil suit against the US.

You got it in before I did, thankyou Ken. Altho I still think they have a better chance of becoming the queen of sheba than getting anything concrete on them...but im a bit cynical

The fantasies on 'collarme' are supposed to be sexual in nature. The liberals seem to have fantasies of Bush and company being indicted. It will never happen. You need a new hobby. Your guy won. Relax. Be happy..

slvemike4u -> RE: Journalist & Co to sue Bush & co? (7/20/2009 8:04:16 PM)

Just trying to understand your position here servant. It will never happen because they are essentially "innocent" and you see no validity to the possible charges.....or do you believe them to be essentially above the law?

servantforuse -> RE: Journalist & Co to sue Bush & co? (7/20/2009 8:16:12 PM)

Innocent. There is also something called 'past practice'.  Obama won't do to Bush what might happen to him down the road. it's kind of like being a cop. There is a silent code of silence to protect the office, and them..Keep those fantasies alive and well.

Hmmmmmmm you start out by saying they are innocent....then you say they will never be prosecuted because Obama would fear establishing a precedent and thus opening himself up for prosecution....then you state that there is effectively a cover up in play (like that in the police forces...a rather nasty jab at the cops if you ask me), so which is it...innocence, fear of a precedant, or a cover up?

DarkSteven -> RE: Journalist & Co to sue Bush & co? (7/20/2009 10:25:18 PM)

It may make it to court, or it may not.  If it does, it will be an embarrassment to Bush but nothing else.  His attorney will demand that Bush turn over materials, Bush will refuse on the grounds that it is classified, and the court will find Bush in contempt.  But the court will have no jurisdiction over him.

It's a start, anyway. Lock the bastard up in a house with nothing to eat but pretzels.

Do I detect a larger agenda at play here panda....the mere mention of pretzels seems to indicate,in my mind anyway,a longing for a much more final judgement?

In case they will have even minimal success financial claims will follow. I would actually recommend civil suit. Criminal case goes nowhere. There is a good chance for success in individual cases. Imagine how much money one can claim for not being able to run poppy fields for several years.

I'm thinking actually reading the link is not high on your to do list...

Which is why the suit is not being brought here:

Al-Haj said: "I spoke to my lawyer, who advises me to do this in Europe. The courts do not have the power to bring [US officials] by force, but at least they can't visit European countries. If they do, [the authorities] would catch them and send them to court."

BUSH & CO. ARE above the law. No question about it. NOTHING will ever come of it. The spawn of BUSH the elder, the worst president in US history, and the worst World Leader in the history of the world will lanquish it's days away, sucking down his Jack Daniels, in Crawford TX. End of story.
