Reduce it to it's most basic:   If the game has no rules, no regulations... then how easy is it for those with the power to do so... to cheat?

When they cheat, is it moral or ethical for them to cause the vast bulk of the players to suffer, and live out shorter life spans due to their greed?

Why should the bulk of the population stomach this sort of treatment from the very few?

Yes indeedy-feed the needy.

SNOPES

Never happened.

Schroedinger never actually put a cat in a box, either, yet we can learn the lesson anyway.

He didn't have to box up the cat, because he was telling the truth. Whoever made up this lesson is lying about the facts of the issue, so  what's the value of the lesson?

TheHeretic -> RE: Professor is a Genius (7/22/2009 9:42:32 PM)

And you know he was telling the truth, without opening the box?  It's a thought and discussion provoking bit of speculation.  It's that whole 'figurative vs. literal speech' thing that causes so much confuzzlement for some.

Personally, I don't buy the class story.  I think the decline in averages would predictably be followed by the smart ones asserting an authoritarian framework, and a merciless culling of the morons and wrongthinkers from the herd.

SNOPES

Yup [:D] ... made 'em think though..didn't I [;)]

Actually, as an analogy of how socialism inhibits motivation it’s not bad. But Snopes is one of my favorite web sites and anytime I suspect a story is an urban legend (and I remembered hearing this one during the Clinton years) I just gotta rush there to check it out and then rush back to let everybody know. It makes me feel superior. [:D]

Ialdabaoth -> RE: Professor is a Genius (7/23/2009 9:39:49 PM)

You can trot out snopes all you want; now that the story has been mentioned, people will not remember that it was debunked - they will only remember the story.

That's the beautiful thing about lies - all you have to do is repeat them often enough, and it doesn't matter if they're not true. Of course, it's easier when people want to believe them.

So what else is new?

Ultimately? What's new is that I'm no longer angry or exasperated with people who consistently ignore evidence in favor of their own warped preconceptions.

I am now angry and exasperated with the people who try to correct them or resist them, as if it will do any good.

Sounds like anger management issues. You can get counseling for that. In the meantime I've always found that this helps me calm down when I'm pissed off.

I assume you mean that you calm down after the catharsis of throwing your speakers against the wall? [:D]

Eh. "Anger management issues" is just a blame-reassignment trick.

Not really, I liked the tune ever since a girlfreind of mine danced naked to it by firelight. You want a tune that makes me want to bash equipment while screaming "stop! stop! for the love of God, Please stop!"? that would be this.

Whatever. It's pretty serious when people are still killing abortion doctors, when people are still dying without health care, when people are still out of work, when people are still being locked up due to stupid racial prejudices, when people are still killing each other over what chemicals they can put in their bodies, when people are still doing everything they can to manipulate the world so that they stay on top and everyone else is helpless.

There's a hundred million things I could list that are wrong with the world, and ninety-nine million of them start with people who would rather operate on "faith" and "gut" than on evidence. And ninety million of those are made far worse by people who think it's fun to stick their dicks in hornets' nests, because everyone else takes things "too seriously".

But it's useless to blame herds for stampeding; at this point, I'm mad at the ineptitude of the herders.

Worry about everything and accomplish nothing. Focus on the grain of sand and not the relation of the grain of sand to every other grain of sand in the universe.

People who quit smoking will still die of something.

I meant that you’re taking my rib poking you about anger management issues too seriously. If you want to take the world so seriously, be my guest. Personally, I find it too exhausting (not to mention depressing) to be pissed off over things that are ultimately out of my control.
