It doesn't surprise me. Polynesians used and still use ashes in their traditional tattooing.

I knew it was an ancient practice; I had no idea it went back that far.

Yep, they found tattoos on Otzi the Iceman. He was from the neolithic period in Europe. It goes back before that into the early paleolithic in cultures all over the world.

The article I posted was about Otzi....he's a favorite of mine. When I go to DC for the museums, I have to visit the iceman exhibit daily (it's a replication).

I also didn't know they made tattoos out of soot, although that makes sense. Fire must have been viewed as such an awesome power.

When I mark a girl..I rub ashs in the marking to make it a scar so it stays.
I have soem symbols..on my body I made...also on the same way.
(I was young and stupid :P )
