I hate hate hate hate flossing, did I mention how much I hate flossing? Well I have some serious oral surgery going on, not because I didn't floss but because of another condition--flossing must be My new best friend--and no not the boutique cute little flavored wax picks, FLOSS, real string---I find the time I spend flossing I could at least, I don't know beat a slave, write a book, something--so ok bright CollarMe-ites, any tips or tricks to make this easy? pallatable? I am lousy at it too btw so I am open to suggestions.

My problem with most dental floss is that they cut my fingers. The only one I can tolerate is Glide. It isn't cheap cotton, it's actually Gore-Tex and it doesn't slice up my hands nearly as much.

You could add a water pic to your regime. But basically floss or look forward to periodontal surgery. Them's your choices. And I do start to slide after a while, and I've been through two rounds of periodontal surgery.

OH OH OH OH Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I also hate flossing!

Well I did.......until I found these cool little disposable plastic gizmos that have a handle, a built in fold out tooth pick, but best of all.......a curved part with a length of floss built in. It is SO damned easy and so not the hassle that wrangling that damned string is.

I found it in the same isle at Walmart. I cannot remember the name of them but they come about a hundred in a little zip lock baggie thing and they are totally the shit.

LaT's right.  You don't need the name.  They are right by the regular dental floss in the aisle.  They are also easier to use for those of us who have longer nails.

I hate having bits of food stuck between my teeth, so I floss and use toothpicks constantly throughout the day. Of course, I am a little OCD. So I carry floss and toothpicks with me. It drives me nuts after even a snack to not have access to either toothpicks or floss. It doesn't take that long by the way. For those that say it cuts their fingers......don't wrap the floss around your fingers so tightly, and don't use so much floss. You really only need a little floss to do the job.

First,

Johnson & Johnson's Reach brand name, "Gentle Gum Care with Fluoride" Mint Woven Floss.
The woven floss carries minty fluoride powder with it, to get in between your teeth and at the gumline, and because it's woven, it grabs food between your teeth more efficiently.  Plus, it's designed to be gentle.

Also, maybe the Waterpik?  I don't know as much about using those.  You probably still need to floss a little, for the more tightly caught food.  I would ask your dentist what else you need to do, when you use the Waterpik, so that you've done all the tooth and gumline cleaning you need.

Get a Waterpik.  It's better than flossing.  Just be careful to adjust the pressure level before you put it in your mouth.  And only use it if your surgery is healed and you are free of sutures.

Gosh yeah i hate that too...I have one root canal treatment and there at times I feel that I need the flossing when e.g. meat or a nut or whatever piece got stuck between that tooth and the one next to it...I just don't have the patience really...if I do it then I tend to do about 1/3 of my teeth and then I think...well, time to go to bed instead.

I also know those "little disposable plastic gizmos" but never got fond of them...still today i find them  at times all over the place when i continue my neverending journey of tidying up

I can't floss due to impacted teeth (small mouth) so I am no help except for getting a waterpik to help out.

I second using "Glide", it's one of the few that I like, and works well.

Can't fucking stand dentists, but it's best to take care of your teeth/gums, sooner than later.

Lastly, as a carnivore, the chances of me getting any more cavities is slim to none.

I hate those individual floss picks. The tension isn't strong enough for me.

And a word of warning for those who don't floss.
Gum disease is nasty. Surgery to correct it starts with 15 shots of Novocaine in the roof of your mouth. Flossing nightly is so much better than doing that, multiple times.

My teeth are very close. I have to floss because food gets stuck. I don't mind flossing i sit in front of the t.v. to do it. I get bored standing in front of a mirror.
Look at it this way flossing keeps that stuff that builds up on your teeth from going into your bloodstream and causing a heart problem. I use wax floss.

FR, after read thru

I like the little disposable flossing gizmos . . . . . Also used to be able to find larger, more permanent plastic Y-shaped gizmos that hold the floss, similar to the disposable gizmos -- haven't seen those since the disposable ones became so widespread . . . . . . Also, I get my disposable flosser thingies at the dollar store . . .. .

I've had a Waterpik in the past, I quite liked them. In addition to watching that you keep the water pressure turned down, one need also be attentive to the direction in which the flow of water is pointed, avoiding a more downward / upward flow (which can create or contribute to pockets below the gumline, especially with higher water pressures) & aiming for a more horizontal angle with respect to the gumline . . . . .

ETA: I used to have a hard time flossing, then I had all my impacted wisdom teeth pulled, all four, & flossing got much easier . . . .

If I could suck it up, I woiuldn't have to floss--<ahem>--lol-

ok an update, I became a bigger person yesterday for tackling this issue---LOL--spent some time in My local CVS as I determined to conquer this, I went armed with all the recommendations noted in this post ( DesFIP: yeah those little plastic things didn't do it for Me either once upon a time)--I carefully perused the oral aisle, comparing floss, floss implements, mouthwash filled toothpicks etc. I discovered the post amazing floss appliance---though made by WaterPik, it isnt water powered, it is powered by a AA battery and has at the end a tiny plastic tip that acts as a high powered floss, ITS MARVELOUS! I can get front, back, between, under, back and under and really gets the teeth clean, it also gets up to that gum line better than floss, well better than My lousy floss techniques!

It comes with 15 tips and get this, sells for $7.99 ( was $5.99 on sale)--it works so well, and can be used with braces, that My 19 YO is getting one today ( she has fulllmouth braces)---so though some may have though this post was silly--it seriously helped. I have had one preop appt, have the second one next week, then we start the heavy construction--I love this guy, he does nothing with out numbing!

And just to add, yep flossing and keeping gum disease to a minimum lowers blood pressure and cholesterol!

So my thanks to everyone as usual for your great ideas!
