Hillwilliam -> Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 10:31:18 AM)

Ive listened to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton bang their yaps together for the umpteenth time about "Racism is alive and well".   I'm thinking, "yes it is.  and those responsible for keeping it alive and well are the ones who benefit most."

I'm going to toss a really tough question out here and let's be serious and mature thinking about it.

Are Jesse and Al and their ilk the ones deliberately keeping racism "alive and well"?   Let's face it.  In a totally race-neutral country (wouldnt that be a utopia), there would be no affirmative action.  There would be no hate crimes.  There would be no political action committees dedicated to "equality".  Most of all, folks like Jesse and Al would have to get a real job and get off the TV.

I know this is going to produce a bunch of "haters".  To them, I say  "Grow up and come out of your politically correct shell".  Use your own brain and think for youself.  this country seems to have a serious lack of that lately

Arpig -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 10:33:12 AM)

Sure, it is their bread and butter, so of course they want to keep the issue in front of the public eye. Taht's why they see racism in many places where nobody else sees it.

olena -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 10:51:09 AM)

To think racism does not exist in life is to be at best a wishful fool or someone who has lived a very sheltered life or thinks they have been wronged by people trying to correct it in some way.

Just take a day and listen to how people talk and here their slurs and stereotypes. To think these are just “good natured” and do not carry over in how they act, who they hire and things of that nature is absurd. Ask a minority who drives a nice car in a nice neighborhood how many times he has been pulled over by the police compared to you over the years. Do you think there would so many people obsessed in wanting to think Obama was born in Kenya if he was white and had a Canadian father?

Are we much better then in our past in racism of course we are. Are there people who profit or are so jaded they see it everywhere and blow it way out of proportion of course there are. But it does not mean it does not exist today.

kdsub -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 11:05:27 AM)

We have changed... racism is no longer systemic... it is time to deal with it on an individual basis.

The above is an important point for African Americans to understand before the backlash from crying wolf losses them their hard fought gains like affirmative action.

I wasnt saying that racism didnt exist.  god knows it does.  What I was saying is how much of our perception of is fed by those whose lifestyle and 7 figure income depends on it?

olena -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 11:15:08 AM)

I would say at this point there is more talk about racism not existing or the lack of needing to protect people from it or punish people who do it in their jobs then the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the country. We are always in the end individuals and are formed by are exposures, other people and experiences. Those pointing to the Jesse Jacksons and agreeing with them or point to them and thinking they fear mongerers already have their opinion and just point to them to express it and feed off them.

They do not have power either way. We the people give them the power.

We should not pay any attention to Sharpton or Jackson or Beck or Boortz.  Each of them has the ability to turn the Grand Canyon into a crowded threatre.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 11:36:25 AM)

There would be no "Minority Health Czar" in the Obama health care plan either.

Absolutely there are many who would prefer to perpetuate the divide than actually do anything to heal it. I can't recall ever hearing a positive word out of either of their mouths without some sort of "but" after it, and never heard either of them condemn acts of racism by blacks. Ive been out of the loop lately with work, but have either of them commented on the Skippy affair?

Mercnbeth -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 11:42:33 AM)

As long as there is government sanctioned racist programs, such as Affirmative Action, there will always be racists; spawned from its "good intent".

When both the candidate who got the job, or promotion, and the candidate who didn't both wonder the same thing, "Was my race a factor?"; AA provides a rationalization reference for individuals to support their racist mentality.

People not being discriminated against usually only see racism when someone else points it out to them that doesn't mean racism isn't there just that some people don't see it. Sharpton and Jackson may be over the top but they are making people face the issue when it otherwise wouldn't make even the local news.

kdsub -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 12:10:28 PM)

Sorry oleans...my comments were for the op... I wish they would break the quick reply tie to the last poster.

I'm not sure you understood what i was saying.

An example St. Louis is now a comparatively small town... only a few 100,000 folks live there now. During the All Star game some local black groups decided to blockade a major highway to protest the nember of blacks hired for City projects... most notably building and street construction.

The City has already agreed in the past to require 25 percent of all contractors be black or women. This means owned and employees…but they were not satisfied with that number… they said too many women had been hired instead of blacks.

Theses unreasonable rules make it impossible for proper bidding on contracts. It is also impossible for a contractor to hire... and train…skill positions and use them on the job they are bidding.

The vast voting populations in this area are white and they see this as reverse racism. They feel that if these contractors were racists in their hiring practices then they should be prosecuted… but other than that the low bidder with a good construction record should get the job.

If this type of reverse discrimination and crying wolf about race keeps up they will demand action with their representatives…bye bye affirmative action.

And of course, the flipside is, if they shut up and were just "good little n*gg*rs," then nothing would ever, ever change.More than likely, things would start to backslide. As evidenced by some of the posts on this list, there seem to be plenty of Archie Bunkers ready, willing, and able to disassemble what gains in equality that have been made.

Now, be a bunch of good little teabag whack jobs, and concentrate on your conspiracy theory dujour, will you? I think this month it's... (checking schedule put out by GOP) Oh, yes... the "birther" movement. Right. Off you go...

TheHeretic -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/28/2009 8:02:24 PM)

Assholes come in all colors.  How hard is that to wrap one's head around?

I don't think this is only a republican issue...at least in my area.. .and you can stick your fingers in your ears all you want... these type of unreasonable demands are a problem in America and need to be addressed. Why not require the contractors to hire people of a particular economic standing in the City?

This damn one race over another is crap... In st louis there are many white poor immigrants such as Bosnians that need work just as bad if not worse than African Americans... The above racist’s rules deny them a living... See if you can look past your obvious bias and see there is a problem with race quotas.

Mars thinks the Republicans cause ALL problems, kdsub. It's rather comical to read the venom that he writes. He went off on a tangent about "birthers" which has nothing to do with the OP's topic. He seems to forget that Democrats were the ones standing on schoolhouse steps in this state when a Republican had to send in the 82nd Airborne to allow 9 black kids to go to school. He also lives in a state full of backwoods, racist attitudes but yet the entire state legislature, Governor's office, both Senators, and most of the U.S. reps are in fact Democrats.

I love how he accused some of the posters on the list of being "Archie Bunkers" because they disagree with Sharpton and Jackson. Mars seems to be fixated on that television character for some reason. He calls a lot of people on the boards that.

Actually, to my knowledge, I've only used the name twice in the last four months. Secondly, it's not MY state... I moved here from Denver. (Let's face it, the only way to eliminate some forms of stupidity is to outnumber them, and negate their votes that way. I'm happy to say that Arkansas is dealing with it's racisim problem. In another generation or two... it will cease to exist for all paractical pourposes.

But, thanks for the ad homenim, SB4U! It shows where your head is at.

i happen to agree completely with the OP

DMFParadox -> RE: Something to wonder about (7/29/2009 5:43:34 AM)

Just to be devil's advocate, it could be said that racism is natural. Everybody values our tribe over their tribe, and we use physical characteristics to identify each other as a first instinct. Ergo, racism.

So in which case racism will never vanish until all races blend. And since the vast majority of people stick to their own race even in the great melting pot, (not counting white men and asian women, for some odd reason*) chances are that not only will all the current races keep existing just fine, but the statistical spread will widen. So the ultimate 'blend' may end up with every color and in between out there, in a big and flat-ish poly curve instead of a bell curve (trending towards bell but with bumps everywhere); which given the instinctual racism mentioned above may mean that racism gets WORSE, not better, until we're left with all sorts of warring variants on Morlocks and... food. I say food because I am so on the Morlock side of that evolutionary tree. (Plus I can never remember what they're called in that book.)

Peace, D

* source: us census on married couples 2002 I think, not sure; I've seen that bit about white men/asian women somewhere though so I'm throwing it in for consideration

You're welcome. Whether or not you claim this state, you live here. You've lived here for quite awhile, and you aren't trying to leave too terribly. You're the one that brings up the Republican Party in almost every post you make, whether it's relevant or not. You describe those that dislike Jackson and Sharpton as "Archie Bunkers," and you've made that comparison several times in the past. You go further in implying that we're all sitting out here thinking they should be "good little niggers." (I'm not a child, I'm not going to spell the slur with asteriks. It's just a moronic example of PC taking over people's brains; as if not spelling the word makes it go away.). You're the only one to use that word in this thread.

No one made a racist remark in this thread. You were the first to imply it, and to put words in the mouths of others (like you always do.). You then go on in your usual fashion and make a comment about the GOP, as if all of detractors of these two race baiting dead-beats (and that's what they are; neither has ever held an actual job) are members of the Republican Party. Sorry to break this to you, but the worst sins against the blacks in American history were committed by members of the Democratic Party. It's a fact.
