In Canada, one of the major political parties is the Bloc Quebecois. This party is by definition a regional party, it exists and fields candidates only in Quebec. Its ultimate aim is to destroy Canada by removing Quebec from the federation. In the meantime, its focus is to get as good a deal for Quebec as possible regardless of the effect on the rest of Canada. It is closely allied with the provincial separatist party, the Parti Quebecois, and together they strive for Quebec independence.

In its first election campaign, because it dominated in Quebec and the anti-Liberal vote was split between 2 competing conservative parties and the NDP, the Bloc actually became the official Opposition (an important thing in Canadian politics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Opposition_%28Canada%29). For  18 years now we have had MPs who's stated purpose is to dismantle the country and split it up.

Here's my question....do you think they Bloc should be allowed to field candidates given that its purpose is to destroy the country?

LOL Arpig, I had a feeling that you might come up with this and congrats, however in this household, there is nothing more likely to make my hubby more apoplectic than mention of Quebec, I have to worry about his heart or an aneurysm carting him off too much to  be able to have a rational conversation.
The Bloc as far as Im concerned in my limited knowledge are they are racially divisive, ignorant arrogant and self serving. If we dont follow their demands they threaten to split from the rest of us. and they use it at every opportunity.
I know many quebecois and for the most part they are great. the ones I have trouble with are the ones that follow the party line. But then I have trouble with  most people who are dedicated single minded followers of anything, especially when they want me to do what they believe is right...
I often wonder what would happen if they did manage to separate, given their reliance on federal income, but at the cost of losing Canada as an entity, I try not to think about it too much.
So Im thinking that no, I dont think they should be allowed to field candidates in the interest of Canada as a whole
my opinion for what its worth
Lucy

They should be allowed in the process. We have to include Democrats.

Cute .
Actually it would be like having Texas or Alaska secessionists as the Minority in the House. Well actually neither is really an accurate analogy, given that Quebec has roughly 25% of our population.

Difficult Arpig very difficult. Personally though I would allow them for two reasons. One is that as a democracy [and I think canada ranks highly with it's system] if a country is no longer capable of swaying people's minds from ideas like this then it is already lost. Following on from that iot will stimulate the other political parties and keep themfrom complacency. I am hoping that the recent showing of the B.N.P. in  Britian will have the same effect on our politics.

You have Scottish nationalists in Parliament don't you? Are they trying to take Scotland out of the UK completely, or just to rearrange the political system used there?

It depends usually which way the wind is blowing in Scotland. At the moment there's a relatively large movement for Scotland to cecede from the kingdom and be independent. Over the years the english parliament has devolved power to wales and scotland so they have their own parliaments and a fair bit of control over their respective countries so reform of the system is less on the agenda now.
