I color my hair red, which is the hardest color to keep, and I wash and condition my hair every day, otherwise it feels dirty to me. As mentioned, wet your hair thoroughly before getting in the pool, I've also heard slathering it with conditioner will help, but again, you're in a public pool, so that may not be a good idea....and then rinse it when you get out of the pool using the vinegar every time....vinegar is great for soft hair, an no, you won't smell like a pickle...I use it full strength, too, and never had it do any damage. Try putting it up in a bun, that might help cut down on the exposure of the ends to the water. There are also several different types of swimmer's shampoo on the market. And yes, the chlorine will eventually ruin your glasses.....metal doesn't like the stuff, and the hinges are still metal on most glasses. You could try some sort of swimmer's mask or goggles over them, that would be the only idea I have, short of getting a pair of prescription swim goggles.....yes, they make them. But that would depend on how seriously you plan on swimming, as they probably aren't cheap or covered by your insurance. I grew up in the water of a pool and Lake Ontario, and my hair was fine. Just take care of it like you normally would.
