Nothing beats real live experience. Nothing beats knowing what you're doin safety-wise before hand. There is always the point of victim origin: yourself to experiment with. I set myself on fire, put needles in my skin etc etc long before attempting it with others. As the things I was doing were not represented in mainstream media nearly as much as they were featured in other people's fear and superstition, I sought out real educational resources first.. the ones with footnotes, references and citations, written by people with all kinds of letters surrounding their names and compared then to the anecdotal information from others participating in the same type of play. In all avenues of education, at least in my admittedly less than humble opinion, are not only correct but necessary. Knowing what it will do to you physically is one thing. Texts don't often get into the reasons why a person might wish to do these things and the ones that do are providing reasons without knowing the specific people involved... That has to come from real live people and not evetyone is there for the same reason. As a Dom I feel responsible toward knowing if the person asking is asking for emotionally healthy reasons or what harm may come about by fostering it without addressing a root issue.
