Members of California's largest state employees union have voted to authorize a strike due to anger over Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to furlough them three days a month.

There seems to be a problem remembering exactly who works for who, here. I say any state-employed public servant who walks out the door on this should be fired.

The union has to be nuts to try that now.

So they're mad about being off three extra days a month.....and in their fired-up "I'll show him!" mindset, they're off now.....permanently? That's bright. I'm sure Arnie's quaking in his boots.

It is kind of ironic. The union says that furloughs are illegal, but they are santioning a strike that is illegal..I was a union member ( CWA ) for 33 years. This is not the way to do business in times like these.

I'll bet there are plenty of unemployed workers who would be lined up to take their jobs if they wanna be stupid about this. Just because you are in a union it still does not guarantee you a job, or in times like this it does not guarantee that you won't have to make some temporary concessions to keep your job.

Public employee and teachers unions have a very different mindset in these matters. It is not a job, it is an entitlement..and so are the benefits..

They will be losing 14 % of their wages. how calmly would you take that message? How much would that affect your lifestyle, how would it affect your ability to pay your bills, especially in this economy.
They are in position to strike, doesnt mean they will.
Im not in favour of strikes, we just had one here and it played hell with the city in many ways, but I do understand why they are upset.

If most of the rest of the workers in this country take a cut, why should they be immune ? It is the tax payers giving them a job in the first place..

Could you please give me a clue/link/source on who else has taken a pay cut of that amount. Im not being flippant, Im being serious. Not loss of job but paycut of that amount?
The taxpayer pays for them because they are needed by the tax payers...

The unemployment rate in this country is nearing 10 %. They didn't take a cut and have no job at all. State and local public employees in Wisconsin are taking furloughs.

I did mention NOT job losses, I realise that its a hell of a state of affairs job wise,
Wisconsin paper only tells me that the 16 day furlough will equal to approx 3% cut.... quite a big difference to 14%
Under Doyle's plan: • Non-emergency state employees will be required to take 16 days of unpaid leave in the next two years, saving up to $120 million a year. Those furloughs equal a 3% pay cut, the governor said. Prison guards and those who care for the disabled would not be furloughed.http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/44533322.html

Would I like it ? No. Would I accept it ? yes. Since California has such a hugh deficit, the bigger cuts are necessary.

While I won't post My prior place of employment here, I'll be happy to share it with you on the other side, Lucy. We took that kind of hit after oil prices started zooming two years ago, as we made products derived from petroleum. It wasn't a direct cut. What the company did was eliminate it's shift structure from four 36 hour weeks and four 48 hour weeks (the eight over the forty hours was paid in overtime) to rigid 40.

So, yes, the same thing does happen in the private sector.

Thank you Lady P, I dont know how I missed your response yesterday. I was in no way denying that other people are having it rough, it is happening here too with the recession, altho luckily not to the same extent. I can understand why people are upset with strikers, but I also get the workers, being upset at losing such a chunk of wages. It was more of a reaction to the "fuck them... Im alright Jack" attitude from some others.

There are a lot of companies cutting back by giving their employees days off instead of a pink slip. While the cutback is hard, it is a hell of a lot better than being laid off. If the union members want to strike, I think that is great. I am sure there are a lot of unemployed people there who would love a chance at a job, even if it means 3 extra days off a month.
