My last sub worked in a law office so the collar had to be discrete.  she had a long elegant neck so the choice was a satin choker with a little locket.

aldompdx -> RE: Collars (8/5/2009 5:23:02 AM)

Consider a solid metal collar on the third finger.

The ancient symbology of a collar (ring) is the union of masculine control/presence and feminine openness/energy. Both aspects exists within each person, to one degree or another.

Whilst rings are good, collars are ideal to attach such necessities as leashes to and of course are absolutely necessary for a shirik. personally, my only problem with a ring in the third finger is it's association with a wedding ring both in social occasions and from a symbolic aspect. I do not equate a wedding ring with a collar unless the Dom is married tio the sub./slave. In a poly home, it could be downright confuzling for those not in the know.. Still, each to their own.

leadership527 -> RE: Collars (8/5/2009 9:58:25 AM)

I agree IB.

There are certain "practical" uses of a collar that our wedding rings don't handle so well. I have a hard enough time snapping the leash on her cursed collar sometimes... Trying to clip it to her wedding ring would be a real task *laughs*. And for us, the leash is a very important symbol as well as a practical tool.

In addition, having done a vanilla->M/s move, I wanted a new symbol to look at which symbolized whatever it is that's different now. Heh, Carol, predictably, doesn't much care since to her it wasn't much of a transition from vanilla to M/s.

Right now, Sir has me in a leather dog collar from a pet store.....black with red stitching and silver,uum, not exactly studs because they're flat.  But you get the idea.  Eventually, He wants to get a silver choker necklace with a tiny lock on it to put me in.  We just need to get looking at some places for one.  No matter what He puts me in, it's precious to me because it's His.

whiteslavebitch -> RE: Collars (8/5/2009 2:05:03 PM)

MasterK permitted me to choose the collar I wear. It is a sterling silver double rope chain. I work in a professional capacity, and I cannot wear a traditional looking collar.
Everyone that comments on it just states what a nice necklace I have.

It can be seen on my profile on b.com.

aldompdx -> RE: Collars (8/5/2009 3:15:24 PM)

I was addressing the original question, which pertained to: "an embodiment ... of the emotional ownership already in effect." I humbly apologize, in recognition that feelings are not sufficiently "practical" for this group.

Why do you assume that everybody must use a "shirik" (google: imaginary dragon)? The focus on this site has been shifting to the external physical act, as reflected in the number of prostitute profiles. Even when a genuine question is asked about symbolic embodiment of feelings, a response which fails to focus on external practicality is rebutted.

BTW, wearing a "practical" collar 24/7 has no practicality as described here. In accordance with other preferences expressed here, it should never be adopted. A collar is only practical and should only be worn when used for physical restraint. Symbolic embodiment of feeling is apparently shunned as too deviant and not in line with this group.

Call a spade a spade! If the sole objective is a practical method of physical restraint, then only use the tool necessary to do the job, and do not use it when it is not properly in use. If the objective is to symbolize a feeling, then wear a symbolic rather than a literal object. If the objective is to live in a deluded fantasy that one is physically restrained even when they are not, then go live in a fantasy world such as the planet Gor.

Heh, fair enough. For the record, the objective of the collar is "all of the above" for us. So we do a little of it all. The collar is a tool, a symbol, and a fantasy aid all in one. Probably most significantly, "I just like it". Carol, as always, could care less about BDSM or related symbols. It's the wedding ring that you'd have to pry off of her.

IronBear -> RE: Collars (8/5/2009 4:03:16 PM)

In the most part we can agree to disagree. If you wish to look only at the emotional aspect of collars. However you appear to be dismissing that many actually prefer to wear a collar and since there have been a number of alternatives to the traditional slave collar which can be worn in bed or work etc.

For your education a shirik is not a dragon but consists of a chain from the collar to the ankles. This runs through a ring which in turn is coupled to a short chain attached to wrist cuffs and similarly at the bottom a ring is attached which has a short chain running through it attached to each ankle by ankle cuffs. Again some of us like to have slaves wear this for a variety of reasons of which the aesthetic beauty of a naked girl wearing only the shirik is not the least of them.

I've never cared much for the "dog-type" or overt "slave-type" collars.  They honestly don't fit into my style.  We've also never used a collar in play, so there's not been a reason to have once with any type of ring.

Firm has, however, given me two important symbolic "collars".  The first, a lovely band of silver, he gave to me about six months after we'd met... to solidify our relationship.  The second, a beautiful gold and pearl necklace, he presented to me when I moved in with him.  Though I don't wear either too often, they mean a great deal to me.

The next one, however, means the most and will be worn all the time.

My sentiments exactly.  [:D]

*laughs* The funny thing is, me too Treasure. Yet there Carol sits with her Petco dog collar. Man I SOO should've known that the first collar would draw sentimental attachment. Although honestly, if you ignored the weirdity of it being a dog collar, the thin black stripe around her pale-skinned neck is visually quite appealing.

Oh, and Carol's ring has not come off her finger for 1 second since we were married. Mine only came off for surgery and I really disliked that. So she wore it on a chain around her neck until I was in recovery and then it went right back on even though the doctors still weren't all that pleased about it.

well. this goes out to everyone. in general.

i am asking out of curiosity and because i have been unable to find any threads with this particular question. it is a question of individual aesthetics of course. my own preference leans to the Drop ring Chevron collar found here.http://www.lockedinsteel.com/?Cat=96&CatName=Chevron%20Collars what is your personal preference?

She earned it, I would give her the option of picking out the one she wanted

NihilusZero -> RE: Collars (8/7/2009 12:00:04 PM)

Chain mail seems to be poking at me recently Then again, maybe happening upon a video of Liv Tyler speaking elvish on Google videos may have something to do with that...

Which reminds me, Davan...we need to figure out this Ren Faire thing at some point.

I would give points to this but it would so paint me as an emotional sap. [;)]

During my previous marriage, my wedding ring came off fairly often... it was a loose fit and would easily slip off my finger.

This time around, I want to make sure it fits properly.  Once Firm places his ring on my finger (April 29, 2010 [:D]), I don't want it to come off unless it has to.

Liadon666 -> RE: Collars (8/9/2009 11:57:39 PM)

i would imagine a chainmail collar might get slightly uncomfortable in the end. just a thought. but the rings scraping across the skin regularly. wouldn´t it possibly hurt at length?

IronBear -> RE: Collars (8/10/2009 12:46:07 AM)

Actually no it doesn't. I had one girl in maile collar which she said was the most comfy thing she had worn for lengthy periods. I've worn a titanium maile shirt against my skin for up to 72 hours at a time and found it like a second skin so that I forgot I was wearing it. Mine you the links need to be closed properly so there are no rough ends. Normally I would, when making a maile coat for medieval combat, follow the traditional path where the ends of each link is flattened and a hole punched through to allow each ring to me riveted, circa 12thC. For a collar these days I would have the maile over either light black leather or black velvet which will in turn enhance the steel of the collar although it wopuld look good with read in the background too.

Liadon666 -> RE: Collars (8/10/2009 2:54:32 AM)

hmm interesting.my only experiences in making chain mail in any sense. was for a project when i was learning to make silver-link bracelets and necklaces.

spookyfe -> RE: Collars (8/13/2009 9:21:07 AM)

i wear a necklace which is very short and has a pebntagram on it very significant to us. i have not removed uit only once for an xray. my master recently gave me a thumb ring which means so much to me. i also have a leather dog collar which i wear during play and sometimes when we are alone
