My girl wears a "Turian" style Eternity Collar (http://eternitycollars.com/index.php?cPath=18_44).

My personal views on collars, other than those just for looks, or practical use, are that they should be made of steel and lock. I know a lot of people don't feel that their lifestyles would allow such things, but honestly it hasn't really been an issue. She has been wearing hers for 5 years now and other than a few comments on it (usually thinking it is some tribal thing) it isn't a big deal. She is even in management, and wears a personalized heart shaped dog-tag on it, so it appears that if YOU don't make a big deal about it, others don't either. It's not like we are still in the 50's or anything, well... maybe it is still kind of like the 50's here in Maine... but we get away with it anyway.

Sometimes I see pretty collars and think I would like to pick up other styles for something that stands out a little more, or maybe a flat-style (the one you linked originally was nice) for a change. I always seem to fall back into my idea that once it's on... it's ON, though, and I have never changed it.

For play I have a nice soft strong locking leather collar. I have not yet been collared in the sense of a long term D/s relationship, but I would probably have to wear a ring. My skin is incredibly sensitive to metal and rings are the only jewelry I can wear. Even change in my pocket can give me a reaction on my thigh. It sucks but I think the type of symbol matters little as long as the meaning is clear.

I envy you your "handiness" IronBear. I would've liked to make the collar that Carol wears but given our relative propensities (I'm not allowed to use a screwdriver because I hurt myself with them), it was her that did the fabrication (oh, and the jokes that spawned out of that... "What, not only do I have to give you my freedom, but I have to make my own collar too?" *chuckles*). I did the design. Still though, it'd be neat if i was different and could do even some of the things you listed in your post.

Isn't that what a slave is suppose to do; Is do the work for the master?
As far as collars My pet needs to have one that I can place a lead on to remind her she is my pet.

You make a good point about the sub/slave making his or her own collar as it does personalise it and will have additional meaning. Likewise the Master/Mistress crafting a collar allows it to be personalised which is why I insist on making a collar for a slave, even more so for a collar which will be worn by a personal slave of mine, as I will incorporate parts of her, such as hair and/or blood in the crafting to add an additional link and binding essence similar to the ones incorporated in the "brand"
