i have heard that there is a particular significance to there being three D rings on a formal collar; and while i have sought to find the answer online, it eludes me. Is this so? Can any here tell me what they may know of the meaning, or intent of these three rings?

There may be "a meaning" to individuals, but there isn't any universally accepted meaning.

To me is just means some extra attach points.

It means that you can attach both wrist cuffs and a leash to the collar. There is no deep, existential reason. You need to look at collars with 5 rings for that.

Himself is from New York and I'm from SF. We've both been practicing BDSM for 20+ years.. neither of us have ever heard of any special significance to 3 D rings on a collar. If you find something out, please post it though!

You might want to check back with the person who alluded to it as a starting point.
