This isn't really a "political thread" in the normal sense.

I don't necessarily agree with several things about this incident, but I'm not really concerned about them at the moment.

What I want to say is that - after listening to Ling on TV - that I'm proud to be an American, and proud of Bill Clinton bringing both the reporters out.

I can imagine their feelings to be taken from prison, where they were convinced that they would be spending the next decade or so, and be confronted with a smiling Bill Clinton.

Despite my political disagreements with Clinton, I've always kinda liked him (his affability is one of his great strengths), and I'm glad that he was able to get the reporters out, and I can empathize with their great relief and shock at seeing his boyish grin, and feelings of elation, knowing that America came for them.

Kudos to them all.

Firm

A mother and child reunion, with Grandpa Bill smiling in the background.

Thanks Bill.

does it matter what was behind it as long as those women came back? are we really that far gone into party lines that we cant pause long enough to smile about a good deed done by the "other side"?

i think its wonderful they are home again, no matter who brought them home.

 You know...

I'm pretty sure those women would have been equally happy to see George W. Bush.

Let's just be happy they are home.

Firm, I agree.

It seems like there've been a lot of Americans held since Obama was elected.  The Somalian pirates, the NK women, the Iranian journalist and now hikers.  I hope it ends soon.

Youre damn right it matters what was behind it. Clinton fucked up negotiations with NK, a terrorist state. What did OB have to give up? You dont negotiate with terrorists, period.

I totally agree.
Clinton gave N.K. $2 Billion of the Taxpayer's money when he was president which they used to further their nuclear capibilities.
The peoplein Washington need to understand that it's not a good thing to be giving the Taxpayer's money away to any foreign country.
Just look at the massive corruption in "foreign aid."

So Popeye..... it was totally wrong to send millions of $$ every year to the USSR in food, medicine, and cash - allegedly for humanitarian aid during the height of the cold war...... and of course it's Very wrong to send millions to the Israelis to keep them propped up..... and it was dastardly to prop up damned near EVERY fucked up dictator in the east, west or south that the US DID INDEED prop up for the profits of a few industrial buddies.
In my opinion, Kim is dying and his twisted mind wanted a foto op with Clinton for posterity..... nothing more. Since he uses any money he can get his hands on for military development - all he can ask for is 'food' for his starving population. Don't hold your breath on anyone sending food to him any time soon.

I agree with you tazzy, can we not for once simply feel that what was behind it was the rescue of two Americans?

And as for back bashing the billlboy, its history, over, in the can, done, finito, spit out the grizzle people and focus on today, if you think you could have or could do better, either run for office or get active on some committee.

i suppose Cat it would have been better to let them stay and suffer, instead of bringing them home. I can see the headlines now.. Clinton turns back on two women. Some people you just can never make happy. they are home, their families are thrilled... and if those who didnt try and twist every news story into a political angle for one party or the other, the only notice given to this would have been... Bill made two families extremely happy.

Unless of course it was YOUR Sister or Mother.....your bias exceeds anything I have yet to wtness on these boards...
Just hate the fact that it was Clinton that was succesful.....obviously it would be so much better to have left those ladies in jail for 12 years in North Korea....You are indeed amusing....

I hear when Clinton was asked to go to Korea and meet with Kim, he jumped at the opportunity.  then when he realized that "Kim" was a guy he was hurriedly tossing the flowers and chocolates in the trash can

We don't know what went on behind closed doors.

Kim Jong Il gets his photo op, Clinton gets some more limelight, the women are home. Win. Win. Win.

Maybe the administration used Clinton's charm as a back door opportunity to get things moving vis a vie NK and US relations. And don't think for a second it was anything but approved by the Obama administration.

When billionaire Steve Bing heard his friend Bill Clinton was embarking on a mission to free U.S. journalists in North Korea, Bing offered his jet -- a personal favor that could cost $200,000.
Avjet Corp, the charter company that operates and manages Bing's Boeing business jet, was alerted on Friday to prepare to fly to North Korea, said Andrew Bradley, senior vice president of the Burbank, Calif.-based company.

"He's a personal friend and supporter of Mr. Clinton and when the need arose, he graciously offered his aircraft to be part of this historic event," Bradley told Reuters on Wednesday.

And the US didnt even pay for the flight!

From the stories I have read, it appears that the US was told in advance that the women would be freed if Clinton went (apparently Kim rejected a visit by Al Gore). There doesn't seem to have been any secret back door deals made, it really does appear that Kim wanted his photo op with Clinton. If there really was any secret deals to be made, then wouldn't Hillary have been the Clinton Kim wanted to talk to? Exactly what deals could Bill have made? What authority does he have, what position of power?  All he had to work with in the way of a trade is his face and his fame, and it appears that is exactly what he traded for the release of these women. Not a half bad deal to my eye.

It just occured to me, given how tightly controlled information is in North Korea, its entirely possible that the people there still believe Bill is an important part of the government. I bet Kim is spinning this domestically as a powerful US government figure coming begging the oh-so-magnanimous Kim to release the evil spies.
