Has anyone had a dog with mast cell tumors? My dog is a 5 and a half yr old german shepard/husky mix who is my darling girl. I noticed three weeks ago that she had a lump on her front leg, and arranged for a vet appt the next week to aspirate the mass. The cytology came back inconclusive, but we had to go back again in 10 days to get the results of a thyroid test (she's gained 5 lbs since march, but has been eating less food with the same activity level if not more) so we got another aspirate then. Which also came back inconclusive. Meanwhile, the consistency and the location of the mass has changed slightly (gotten harder, rounder, and moved a bit).

I've gone ahead and scheduled her for surgery next week to have it removed, but I'm very worried that it will be a tumor, and that I'll have to keep her crated and in an elizabethian collar for several weeks post-surgery to keep her from licking the incision.

So, has anyone had a german shepard or husky or mix of the two with mast cell tumors? Did surgery eliminate the problem, or was there reoccurence?
