I am far too busy to play in the chat pools, the few times I was there, My good time with some regular posters was spoiled by arrogant, vulgar, obnoxious horn dogs, I can get that at the grocery.

Cat,

I think your seeing a culture difference and yes their tends to be a clan mentality in the chat rooms.

Two different frames of mind, I think.

I've ventured into the chats here two or three times, and I find it boring. For the most part, the participants are actually very friendly and welcoming, but I think in general they are more into just kicking back and joking around...It's all "fluff". There's just no substance there. Whereas on the message boards, people are more into discussing topics of a serious nature. It's two different animals, therefore each is going to draw a different kind of crowd.

marie,

Bingo! I have found the same issues.

Different how??? Can you clarify the "mind set" you're referring to???

MSLA,

Well for one thing they tend to be clannish and there is hardly ever any honest discussion on any subject other then an occasional scene.

From a time before AOL introduced unlimited access chat rooms were a means to interact with others, especially those known personally but separated by great distance. $1,500.00 phone bills were quite common during those days and in-depth meaningful sharing of information and technique was quite common and/or the planning of events that protectively brought chat room peoples together in a real life setting were often part.
Even before AOL, chat rooms served to overcome the underground exploitations that were so common during those years, chat rooms took D/s from the dirty under the counter magazines and underground paper ads to a point of larger numbers of people coming together under common banner with a sense of dignity and individual expression.
Chat rooms today are not what once they were but they performed a vital service at one time.

I detest chatrooms.  I have for a long time.  I have no use for them, and probably even Less use for those who are enamored of them.

The message board systems - whether here, or a few other places where I'm a denizen - are a lot like "coming home" for me.  I've been online since before chatrooms.  (Yes, I've been around since before AOHell.)  My time online springs from a point where there was no "internet" except on a few isolated university levels that practically no one Could access - much less Would access.  The local BBS systems were alive and well though, and home to people who actually KNEW each other - face to face, sharing births and deaths and weddings and divorces and anniversaries and holidays and everything in between.  We got together FREQUENTLY to party with each other.  If we wanted to "chat" - we used a *gasp* Phone, or we drove across town after work and visited for a while.

Different mindset?  Definately.

I used to chat a lot in IRC, meaning I had a couple of channels I frequented, and would pop in occasionally to see if anybody said anything. I always meant to visit the ones here, but never got around to it, probably never will. Chat was fun while I was into it, then I got into these forums. I suppose someday I'll move on to something else, God I hope its not twitter.

I've run into nice people in the collarme_beginners room a few times, but otherwise yeah... Disappointed in the chat rooms. Nevermind the actual conversation, it always seems like they either have way too many people or none.  It also seems like there are multiple rooms devoted to some subject areas and none to others.

oh chatrooms, the bathhouses of the internet..
i find the people well.. retarded. the convo is starved into one conversation among regulars, a group of men asking to hump the one females leg in the room, and some guy preaching about how much he knows about subject at hand, grammer nazis and slashy speak constantly around.. so on.

the boards contain some of this yea, its a matter of preferance to speaking to others i find the general feel of a forum beats a chatroom anyday, and these forums have some smart speakin folk around...
awe shucks, i love you guys!

Thought about setting up a CM ventrilo. Then I could get other stuff done while listening to people rabbit on. Only problem is how to drag all the posters in.

seababy,

I believe that it boils down to time preservation for us posters, the chat room folks seem to have alot more time to stay and wait.

When I joined CM, I ventured into the chat rooms a couple times. It appeared that the participants were mostly folks who chatted with each other on a fairly regular basis. I couldn't follow what was going on and felt like I was intruding, so I tiptoed out. I'd actually forgotten about the CM chat rooms and may take a lookie loo.

When you go I suggest that you bring a good ration of patience.

I made the mistake of going into the chat rooms once. Once.

While I may not have a lot to say these days on the message boards, I prefer talking to people in this medium than I ever would in the chat rooms. I've tried, but the posturing chases me away almost every time. I can't pretend to play at submission, and that's what it always feels like to me, no matter how hard I try to take it seriously.

scarbonn,

Your is an example of why we do not go there, but why do they not come to the boards?

Well I just popped into both the Off Topic and Politics & Religion chatrooms and I was the only person there, so I can't see what the attraction might be.

Well one might try a more populated room!

I enjoy both the forums and the chat rooms. I have moderated a few of the rooms over the years but really have no time or interest in doing so now. I am a regular in at least three of the rooms as I can have a quick cach up with RT friends that are scattered around the globe. I agree that it can be 1) boring if one wanders into a room created for friends to catch up in. Everyone is welcoming but chat is specific to regional munches events etc. 2) nauseating in rooms tha are deicated to online play 3) great fun if the mix is right. On refelection not that much different from the boards, people are people

Chatrooms... heh.  If I had the strength of will and the patience to do so, I could probably write up an entire thesis categorizing, describing, and analyzing the different types of people that go there and what they are like.  Most if not all populated chat rooms have at -least- one person who has been to one of the *chans and considers himself/herself an Anon.  It's actually an interesting, if extremely... unique, culture that has evolved over the past decade or so.

Chatrooms for me were actually the only social activity I got growing up, whether they be roleplaying, casual, or cyber.  I know that isn't going to paint me in a very good light but, heck.  My parents moved around a lot and that meant starting over -again- in a new school -again- and make new friends -again- and leave the ones I managed to make behind -again- and the only stable thing was the net.  Parents seperating didn't help, and neither did a lovely season of school in the 7th grade that more or less crippled my self-esteem and turned me into an introvert.

... I got better!  Honest!  Real life friends, parents are together again, and social activities I swear!
