I need some ideas on what works...

FangsNfeet -> RE: What weight loss program worked for you? (8/6/2009 10:06:49 PM)

Low fat diet. No sweets, no soda, no juice. Just water, fruits, veggies, lean burgers with not cheese, no mayo, low fat peanut butter, skim milk, high fiber etc... with a 30 - 45 min swiming work out every other day.

As my metabolism changed throughout my 20's I went Low Carb. That also worked.

The five to six small meals a day that's low in fat is what's best for my mood and still works for my body. I have a naughty day once a month.

Number one piece of advice. Whatever you pick, don't change it. Give any plan 100% for atleast three months before you go "This diet sucks!" and try another plan. Nothing will work if you don't follow through with some self discipline.

The "My husband left, I lost my job, my Mom was diagnosed with cancer and oh yeah, my dog killed my cat.  The only thing that I want is coffee." Diet.

I havent looked at your age.

But i recall, everytime we didnt clear the plate, being reminded of the starving masses.

drove us mad as kids, normal reply was, "send it to them"

As to your question. eat when hungry, stop when you're full.

i will leave half a plate of food now, may reheat it next day, but i wont be bullied into clearing a plate.

I now weigh 5 stone less than i did 4 years ago.

The tried and true. Be more active. I lost about 60 pounds when I started working a much more physical job than I had been working. I leveled out but still needed to loose some more weight so I went back to the gym and started working out. Lost about 15 pounds there and was heading back in the right direction when various issues of time and such kept me away from the gym. Now am starting to gain some back. Which is why I went out and checked out a new gym that has hours more suited to my job and life.

Of course you don't have to go to a gym. You can do all kinds of programs in the comfort of your own home or take brisk walks around the park. The point is modern society tends to take away the need for physical activity for most people. So we get a little soft and do not engage in enough "exercise" kinds of activities to burn off the excess calories we take in.

Some diets will work. But I think it has been shown pretty well over the years that learning to control what you eat and the portions you eat combined with some form or exercise and weight program( you don't have to be a bodybuilder-but adding some muscle is good as muscle burns fat) tends to be the best program for loosing and keeping weight off.

Not sure where your at and your general knowledge. But Covert Bailey has some good books that explain the basics of exercise and nutrition in simple ways that anyone can understand.

The "He makes me weigh in every morning and report the number to him" diet.
It makes you aware of every bite of food you put in your mouth.

Patience, time, good self esteem to start with, and religiosly watching those food groups and water water water.

OK, I started at 250 pounds 10 years ago. I did the Protein Power diet, modified for me...basically cut carbs down to about 30 grams per day. Also included in that was a change in mindset. After travelling, I realized that Americans simply eat too much. I started to order less at restaurants, made smaller portions for myself and my family, and amazing things happened. I went from 250 to 205, where I stayed for about 4 years.

Then did the "Husband left me for an 18 year old, thank the goddess the fuckball is gone" diet. Happiness and less stress is amazing. I ate less, if I wanted something "naughty" I would have a bite of it, but mostly I learned that I didn't NEED to have it. I went from 205 to 170. Then I stopped smoking and gained back 15 pounds, where I sat for three years.

Then this February, I started the Raw Diet. It's simply amazing. I've lost 30 pounds since then, and I'm currently about 80% raw. I'm too much of a carnivore to give up cooked meat permanently. Side benefits are that I'm no longer on meds for High BP or diabetes. All of my readings are now in normal ranges, and I feel so much better!

While I agree with FangNFeet, that you should stick with whatever you choose for at least 3 months, the Raw Diet is very effective to jump start you, but you have to be 100% faithful for 30 days. You can do ANYTHING for 30 days...if I did, so can you. You may find, like I did, that after 30 days you want to add a few things back in, but be careful not to binge at around 2 months...

With any of these diets, I started walking, even if it was just to get out and walk a few blocks, or walk the mall. Currently, if I am on the computer reading my favorite blogs, I put on some fun music and I just MOVE. It doesn't have to be fancy, just get off your gluteus maximus and move. I try to move for at least 15 minutes at a time, I've done as much as an hour of moving...dancing in place, moving my arms, etc.

Same thing goes for watching TV. I don't watch TV anymore, but if I pop a movie in, I just get up and move.

Finally, every day, wake up and say, "I weigh XXX amount". My first goal weight was 158, and I'm there now, in fact, I'm at 156. Soon, I will have lost 100 pounds from my heaviest. So I've been there and done that, and I am more than happy to help anyone else in their journey.

OP, In all actuality ALL programs work IF you do them correctly but more so follow them exactly.  However, if you don't learn to keep it off by learning the maintenance of the program you are doing -- here is a hint most maintenance programs eventually level out to portion control and acceptable calorie intake for you as well as consistent exercise with a HEALTHY combination of all the food groups that keep fats low to moderate focused on GOOD fats only, carbs low to moderate focused on GOOD carbs only and low sugar (both natural sugars such as in fruits and processed sugar as in well sugar) and drinking plenty of water.  THAT is usually what all maintenance programs come out to be.

What weight loss programs i found that i like and work?  My body loves low carb program -- atkins more so than south beach as south beach allows too much choice for me lol, my body loves it and the fat that is allowed keeps me full and allow me to eat more of the types of food i like and i enjoy meat and cheese, low fat never worked all that well for me.  But my body also LOVES exercise lol unfortunately i am the most laziest person alive lol.

I would research programs that allow you to have many of the foods you enjoy or at least have some kind of substitute for same (i.e., low carb has many cool substitutions for many favorites -- i.e., mock danish is eggs, cream cheese, splenda and cinnamon).  Then work with it and follow it and FOLLOW THE ACTUAL PROGRAM through maintenance.

Yeah...strangely I'm enjoying this diet quite a bit. I didn't think I would. That first weigh in was torturous, but it's gotten a lot easier especially when I see the weight going down. He informed me that the exercise schedule starts in September. [&:]

The only diet where I've actually experienced pounds dropping off quickly is the Atkins diet.   But it really got sickening eating nothing but eggs, meat and hard cheese ... but it worked.

That combined with walking about 3 miles a day... I lost 10 lbs rather quickly.

YoursMistress -> RE: What weight loss program worked for you? (8/7/2009 6:58:04 AM)

I adopted several rules a few years ago, and try to follow those fairly religiously.  These were permanent changes I have made to my eating habits, as I believe that a diet, with an eventual return to pre-diet eating habits and methods will, at best, delay the return to pre-diet health conditions. Thanks to Anthony Robbins for the inspiration for many of these changes.

Rules:

1) Eat every 2-3 hours, smaller meals and snacks. - I actually eat more food than I used to, but have lost about 20 lbs in this way.

3) Increase intake of fruits and raw/slightly cooked vegetables.  - No brainer here.

4) Eat carbs and veggies or proteins and veggies, but not carbs and proteins together. - Apparently mixing complicates and delays digestion, actually observed.

5) Drink water up to 10 mins before a meal or 10 mins after, but not during.  - Dilution of digestive juices and slows down digestion.  I find that increase of raw foods (see rule 3) reduces my demand for water.

6) Stop smoking, coffee, soda; limit alcohol. - Sources of acidity, try to maintain slightly alkaline balance.

7) Have dessert to signify the end of a meal, even if it's only a small piece of chocolate. - Hey, it's a rule.

Everyone here pretty much hit the nail on the head.  I am diabetic so I have to watch what I eat.  The Atkins diet in moderation is a good overall platform.  The key is be consistent, exercise and eat healthy fresh foods.
I have a couple of friends that are on nutrisystem and they seem to be doing extremely well.  The cost breaks out to be a little cheaper than eating normally.  You might want to call them.

Hi sgs, if this is all you were eating beyond the first 2 weeks then i hate to say it but you weren't doing it correctly. Atkins advocates veggies, while the first 2 weeks has a limit of 3 cups a day after that you should start moving up the scale of on going weight loss which the first rung is MORE veggies lol.

The problem with a lot of programs people stay longer on the induction phases thinking they will lose more weight faster but its wise to do the plan the way its laid out.

One of my favorite meals was stuffed zucchini, which had meat, cheese and veggies mixed together and placed in a zuchini shell. There are soo many low carb recipes (i have a 3 ring binger of over 1000 recipes, if all you are eating is meat, eggs and hard cheese -- something is wrong.
