FangsNfeet -> Obama and Sotomayor High? (8/7/2009 4:52:29 PM)

Come on now. Obama is only approaching day 200 and Sotomayor hasn't even started day one. I thought these two wanted to be known by their actions and deeds instead of their race. Oh me oh my.

i'm sorry...i'm missing the part about Pres Obama & Justice Sotomayor demanding or requesting that these schools be named after them????

eta...my High School was named after a known slave owner...i didn't let that keep me from crossing the threshhold every day, because it wasn't about the name, it was about the education that i received there. Needless to say, however, the few black students  that attended my school weren't quite thrilled about the namesake.

Perhaps rather than focusing on whether or not the race of these individuals influenced the choice of names, consider if the students in this school stand to benefit because they are named after people that instill a desire to learn in others. Both Pres.Obama & Justice Sotomayor stress the role of eduction in their lives. Maybe THAT's why schools are named after them.

How does this have anything what so ever to do with Obama or Sotomayor? Your complaint, trivial as it is, is with the Dallas Independent School District.

My thoughts ran along those lines too.

As for the schools, I think folks should be dead 25 years before we name anything after them. Gives us time to get some perspective.

No one complained when everything was renamed Reagan....

Oh Lord, Tim, don't get me started on National Airport! I'll be dyspeptic for days. Suffice it to say that folks in these parts were not, to put it mildly, overly enthusiastic about the name change--which, if memory serves, was foisted on us by yahoos in Congress. Locals rather liked the airport's honoring a local guy, namely Washington. I actually used to cross out "Reagan" on boarding passes and write in "National"! (I stopped that with the security crackdowns and general humorlessness that descended on air travel after 9/11.)

I do find it darkly amusing that the Ronald Reagan building (which contains a ballroom!) is a monument to everything the Gipper spent his political career fighting against.
