VanIsleKnight -> Red Cross? (8/8/2009 10:26:31 PM)

So, I went job hunting (joy) today when I realized that I didn't want to spend anymore time working at Domino's before I went in for Nursing, and had a pleasant chat with a couple of people from the Red Cross.  I've seen them before over the past few weeks but always had something to do, but figured today I could actually listen to what they had to say and I was actually interested anyways.

About fourty-five minutes later, I've decided that from what I've heard, working for them was -definitely- worth my time and effort and the pay was better then what I was making anyways as an assistant manager of over a year.  I was curious if anyone else here works with the Red Cross and what they think of it.

I volunteered with the Red Cross for a while, what would you be doing? They have a lot of different operations.

Starting off I'd be on the streets and possibly door to door asking for donations, explaining what the Red Cross is and does, that sort of thing.  I'm going to be asking what else I can do though, not because I dislike the idea of doing the donating thing, but if I can potentially make a career out of being with them, then I might pursue that instead of (or alongside) my desire to get my LPN.

My advice is to get your LPN, no matter what.  The opportunities and pay in nursing is WAY better than anything you'd ever have with the Red Cross.  Not to knock the Red Cross, not at all.....but with a degree in nursing, you can almost write your own ticket.

Go get your LPN degree. Nurses are needed badly, no matter where you live at. The Red Cross can be interesting on your resume.

Don't know much about the fund raising side of the Red Cross. I doubt there is a lot of advancement for people who go door to door. Get your LPN and you can always volunteer or get a job with the Red Cross then.

LPN was already fairly secure as a career choice, I was curious though as to what RC would have as well.  Most likely I'm going to work with them for a little while, school, and maybe volunteer with them on the side or some such.  :)

You wont make any money at a non-profit.  finish your degree.
