I can attest to that being very true. It is why I hoped to never EVER feel it again in an intimate relationship. Losing it hurt too much. I can't fathom going through that again.

Do people think it's possible to have an instant connection with somebody as soon as you start talking?  I know it's different for different people, but I've certainly met people who it feels like i've known them longer than my closest friends.  Is this real or illusionary?

It's possible and real for me. Because of empathy. But can make the other person back off.
Immediate connection isn't always lasting.

Most of the time it does not feel as if anyone is truely listening, just waiting until it is their turn to speak. How can I connect with a person such as this.

How sad that you feel that way

I will be happy when I meet the person who truely listens as intently as I do.... holding onto and cherishing every single word, inflection, grammatical idiosyncrasies, stressors, and the like.

Most of the time I am silent. It is better to suffer silence then to open your mouth and be known a fool.

Thanks, that was kind of you.
I think the hard part comes with the lack of closure- you never really know what may have happened. If anything. The question the OP posted about if the instant connection ever happens seems to be yes for all of the people who answered and I think that if those people then go out of your life they leave a bigger hole behind...

I agree 100%.  They come into your life, and with themselves they bring hope and happiness and companionship and wonderful emotions.  It's not long before you consider the person a part of your life, and when they leave, they take all the aforementioned "good stuff" with them.  Sux, don't it?  :(  What sucks even more is the feeling like they may not be the least bit affected by it.

What a true statement this is.  Not a very hopeful one, but true nonetheless.  I'm the opposite of you, I always say way too much and prove myself the fool.
