'Un-American' attacks can't derail health care debate
By Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer

Extract:

However, it is now evident that an ugly campaign is underway not merely to misrepresent the health insurance reform legislation, but to disrupt public meetings and prevent members of Congress and constituents from conducting a civil dialogue. These tactics have included hanging in effigy one Democratic member of Congress in Maryland and protesters holding a sign displaying a tombstone with the name of another congressman in Texas, where protesters also shouted "Just say no!" drowning out those who wanted to hold a substantive discussion.

From an SEIU website announcement:

Healthcare Town Hall Forum with Congressman Jim Himes
August 06, 2009, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Stamford Senior Center, 888 Washington Blvd., Stamford, CT

Extract:

Action: Opponents of reform are organizing counter-demonstrators to speak at this and several congressional town halls on the issue to defend the status quo. It is critical that our members with real, personal stories about the need for access to quality, affordable care come out in strong numbers to drown out their voices.

Draw your own conclusions.

im not sure what you are trying to point out here.

mnottertail -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 3:07:12 PM)

Well, first it was the forces against the invasion of Iraq under false pretenses; now its affordable healthcare that is un-american.

One trick ponies, or what?

While I do not necessarily advocate the disruptions at the town hall meetings this is all Obama's and the democrats' fault. This is what happens when you fast track important legislation that is hundreds of pages long without giving people the opportunity to read, digest and discuss. The rush to try to get this approved before the August recess is why these town hall events are taking shape the way we have. If Washington had taken their time and slowed down a little I doubt that these shouting matches would be happening.

I didn't realize "Change We Can Believe In" was secret code for "Change: It Has To Happen Today".

Yeah, we've known about and have been shot down about healthcare reform for the last 20 years or better, it's a fuckin' whirlwind.

And I don't give a fuck if the bill is two pages long, most legislators do not read any bills unless they are a sponsor, or scan them when they go on the braindrain as the spinning talking head for the leadership.

I know your congressmen and senators read every word of TARP, and the bailout before and funding for.........

60 years, actually.

Congress never reads MOST of the bills. MANY of them are far too long to read and introduced at the last minute. This complaint is trotted out routinely by both sides whenever convenient. Yawn.

It's being "fast-tracked" -- or more correctly, deliberately mislabeled as fast-tracking -- because opponents know that the longer they can drag this out, the better chance of killing or watering it down. And, since the Right has no positive agenda to present, all they have is to shoot at anything Obama.

Business as usual, both sides. Nothing to see here.

tazzygirl -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 3:24:46 PM)

would have been a brilliant strategy though.

rulemylife -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 3:31:50 PM)

I've think you've already drawn them.

It is critical that our members with real, personal stories about the need for access to quality, affordable care come out in strong numbers to drown out their voices.
</snip>

even more critical is that the Grand Old Party buttonhook someone who can write cogent thoughts and get clauses to agree, without drowning out their own voices.

Yes, the anecdotal evidence ploy, Joe the Plumber's insightful take on affordable healthcare...and why this system is working...it can be a hypothetical.........that's real enough in some circles.

Which is different than the USA-PATRIOT act, how?

Eh, they've been working on this for some time, to be honest. Long enough that people were complaining that they were going too slowly. There's no middle ground - either they're going to slow and not living up to their promises, or they're going too fast and they're trying to force shit down our throats.

You know, here's what I'm seeing. For the past 8 years or so, the Bush administration got away with some horribly abusive shit. And every time the left tried to call them on it, they laughed them down - and then took notes on their arguments. Now, they're making up reasons to throw those same arguments back out, and when people try to call them on how bullshit the arguments are, they get to say "yeah, just like it was bullshit when you said them about Bush, right?" - it's a classic psychological bait-and-switch.

At this point, the Right has given up any pretense of fighting fair at all, or of presenting anything akin to a logical argument. They're just out for blood, and they don't even care how much of it is their own anymore.

Fair point!

Brain -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 6:44:28 PM)

People have been waiting for this legislation for 50 years so I don't know what you're talking about when you say fast tracking

Brain -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 6:48:36 PM)

The right is unbelievable. They start all this nonsense at these town halls and then when people fight back they try to say union people are bullies. This completely misrepresents what Nancy Pelosi said but it's really not surprising, it's in keeping with the pattern of lies to derail healthcare reform.

servantforuse -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 6:48:39 PM)

The folks at these town hall meetings are trying to ask legitimate questions. They are not being answered because the democrats who wrote the bill don't know even what's in it. How could they .? As of last week 7 of 100 senators read it. And we should all just go along quietly...

Are you going to keep making this same post until someone actually believes it?

This is what, the third or fourth time?

Brain -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 6:57:43 PM)

What you are doing is just more right-wing lies like comparing Obama to Hitler.
Obama = Hitler

Considering it's been proven wrong more than once, you might want to add some facts to it.

Other than the usual out of Rush's mouth to your ears and the CM boards.

servantforuse -> RE: Pelosi calls SEIU Actions "Un-American" (8/10/2009 7:38:22 PM)

Since they are all on a month long recess, maybe more than a handfull of them will read it while they are on vacation. Since they are canceling town hall meetings, they should have lots of time to do so. Maybe even John Conyers, democrat,MI. will do so..But I doubt it. He came right out and said he wouldn't waste his time.
