VanIsleKnight -> Movies That Surprised You (8/11/2009 3:38:47 PM)

With this GI Joe movie, I had -very- low expectations.  I was essentially expecting a crappy special effects driven "story" with very low entertainment value that would profit solely by nostalgia.  Basically I wasn't expecting it to be good at all nor would I enjoy it, but my friend wanted me to come and I had a free movie with my SCENE card.

As you might guess from the title of this thread, I was surprised.  The movie was better, much better, then I thought it would be. While the initial twenty minutes I was snarking my way through the action sequences, afterwards I found myself to actually get absorbed into the movie even though I had very very little understanding of the GI Joe world.  I knew about someone named Cobra, and a hot woman in black Baroness (*melt* for her and the red head) but that's about it.

So, while there -was- a ton of special effects and I found myself pointing out a fair amount of plot and movie flaws, the movie itself I thought was pretty good and deserving at least an above average rating, worth the ticket price if it's under $10.

Alternatively, I also thought that Funny People would do a lot better then it did, sales wise.

Lord of the Rings, I finally watched all the movies last xmas...before that I had only seen the last one. They're actually watchable!

The most recent Nicholas Cage movie (Taken, I think it's called?) surprised me.... because it stank so bad. Good actor, crappy movie.

KneelforAnne -> RE: Movies That Surprised You (8/11/2009 4:16:54 PM)

Level,

Taken had Liam Niesson (sp?) in it.  Nicholas Cage was in Knowing.

Personally, I thought Taken was awesome... but I didn't see Knowing, heard it was bad.

I just didn't want people to be confused!!

Ugh! I knew I should have looked it up before posting [8D] you're absolutely right! Taken WAS excellent, I loved it and it also fits as a surprise, Neeson is a fine actor, but I didn't expect him to pull such a role off as well as he did.

Knowing.... pee-yew. Stinker deluxe [:D]

Taken was soooooooooo creepy and sad and scary! Well done, just incredibly intense.

Pan's Labyrinth surprised me. I had just seen a poster and I assumed some kid friendly fairy tale kind of movie. Oops! It was fantastic, just, very adult and violent in ways that were totally unexpected.

Oh oh, also Up! That was really great but way more grown up that I was expecting!

I was pleasantly surprised by the Arnold cameo in Terminator: Salvation.
I hoped that it would be a movie worthy of the first (As I think that the 2nd and 3rd Terminators weren't so great: particularly the second, it sucked!) and it is, imo, the only of the subsequent Terminator movies worthy of the first.

Personally I wonder, after watching many Morgan Freeman films, who would be a better teacher.  Liam Neeson, or Morgan Freeman.

Up was also fantastic, and Pan's Labyrinth surprised me in the same manner. I went in expecting a whimsical tale of fancy and got mature awesome instead.

Truthfully I don't consider Nicholas Cage that great of an actor.  I liked him in Con Air and Snake Eyes, but that's about it. :(

I believe I was surprised by Hostage when I first saw it, I didn't expect it to be nearly as deep as it turned out to be.

I hated Pan's Labyrinth and certain scenes like the one where they smashed the guy in the face with the bottle in it left me feeling kind of traumatized and I just couldn't get that picture and sound out of my head for a very long time.

Have you ever seen Leaving Las Vegas? Terrific film, and I guess it ruined Cage for me. I keep expecting him to rise back to that level, and he never has, so I understand your point.

Birdy

I usually don't like Nicholas Cage. I think he's a crappy actor but Birdy was actually very interesting and the ending was great..not what I was expecting at all which is always a good thing for me since most movies just seem so predictable and boring to me.

The Mask. I thought Cher would suck as an actress. She was amazing!

GreedyTop -> RE: Movies That Surprised You (8/12/2009 8:43:11 AM)

LadyPact -> RE: Movies That Surprised You (8/12/2009 8:43:37 AM)
