VanIsleKnight -> Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/12/2009 5:03:07 PM)

I was just curious, do many other people here have an X-box live account?  Or, more specifically, an x-box live account and a desire to play Civlization, Revolution? >: D

And to make this slightly more conversational, I believe that video games have had a very large leap from the 90's to the present in terms of quality.  I actually feel that some of the stories, voice work, and cinematic entertainment is on par with movies, especially after playing games like Metal Gear Solid, and some of the Final Fantasy games.  When you take into account some lesser known games like Geometry Wars or Braid, well, video games can truly become works of art in terms of quality.

No X-box live account I am afraid. But I have been really enjoying FF3 and Pokemon Platinum for the DS. I know, I am a child. I'm ok with that! ;)

Electroplankton is also incredibly cool. :D

Oh dear, I think over half of my friends own a pokemon game that they still play on a regular basis. I never got into it myself though.

cornflakegirl -> RE: Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/12/2009 7:57:56 PM)

It's kind of ridiculously fun. They are so cute and teeeny! [:D]

VanIsleKnight -> RE: Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/12/2009 8:12:15 PM)

Oh I know.  I -love- the pokemon themselves, the games though I only really liked Pokemon Snap.  And of course the small roles they play in Super Smash Bros.  :D

It's nice though because there are so many different sorts now almost anyone can look through them and find one that suits their personality that "they like the best" in a way that Neopets does.

Personally I like the classic 151 over the others, but there've been a few that I like. :)  I'd probably go for some sort of water type pokemon though, one that I could go swimming with all the time. ^_^

DVsFox -> RE: Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/12/2009 9:05:17 PM)

Don't have an X-Box Live account, I've never found online games to be very fun.  I do play a lot of games, and ironically enough I'm spending a lot of time with Pokemon LeafGreen on my DS.  I am a huge fan of the medium, especially the Metal Gear Solid, Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy(Mostly pre-VII) series.  I think the cool thing about it is that there is room for a ton of different and diverse experiences.

I disagree with the OP in regards to the huge leap in quality between the 90s and today, though.  The late 80s and early 90s were amazing times for videogames. There really has not been a huge leap in gameplay quality since then...but you would be right in saying that there has been a leap in graphical quality.  If that's what you mean, then I certainly agree.  It's just amazing what kind of visuals they have nowadays.

Gameplay wise, we've merely seen the same concepts, by and large, stay mostly the same while the technology has evolved. That's starting to change with the success of Nintendo's Wii and DS...and it'll be interesting to see how that affects the next generation of videogames.  I personally hope that there's equal part classic style games alongside new genres, for example. I love my Wii, but my only problem with it is that most developers for it make the Wii remote a gimmicky, uninspired add-on rather than something that really changes the formula.

I love my Piplup and my evolved Magikarp.

Damn I am really outing myself as a giant nerd. [;)]

VanIsleKnight -> RE: Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/12/2009 9:11:22 PM)

Ah, you're right Fox, I was referring to the graphics. I remember playing my SNES in the 90's and being hugely impressed when the Nintendo 64 came out.  Then I was impressed when they put Mario 64 onto the DS, a -handheld- of all things.  Now though there hasn't been a lot of shocking amazing developments lately hardware wise, and I hope that designers and writers will make a good hard solid effort into producing a game that doesn't rely on graphics.

Which is why I tend to be enjoying indie games a little more.

better graphics sure, but 90s games win hands down in pure awesomeness, snes zelda, mario and metroid, suikoden 1 and 2, kirby, warcraft 1 and 2, starcraft, late 80's to late 90's were the golden age of video games,
now i agree its more arty and like whatching a movie which is awesome, but if i want to play(not whatch) a solid game im gonna pick up an older one, new games are fun and good but i always feel they lack what the older ones had..

It depends on the genre. The newer games aren't all about watching a movie. Those are usually the RPG's. The shooters and such are still very much played instead of watched.

VanityFix -> RE: Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/12/2009 11:28:33 PM)

3d platformers have yet to wow me as well compared to the old ones.
shooters its true are one of the types getting better with time, tho im unsure of dealing with retarded rednecks on the increasing online lean thats happening with these games.

Well that's because the platformers are a dying genre. They were all we had in the 80's/90's. With the advent of true 3D tech, most of it goes toward shooters and sims and such.

Oh they are definitely out there, surely. As an XBox Live vet....I meet them daily. However you can always go into party chat with your friends anytime you don't want to hear the bullshit. My team and I go back and forth. Sometimes we're in party chat and sometimes not. It just depends on our mood.

When we are in room chat and the nitwits start their shit, we have been known to make most of a room leave with our "pretend" gay innuendo. It kinda shuts up the rejects fairly quickly. If they can't 'belittle' you by telling you to suck their dick, they have nowhere to go, insult wise. One guy said a teammate of mine something along the lines of how he liked to take it in the ass. My teammate replied "Dude, is that an offer? My ass HAS been feeling kinda empty." To which another teammate chimed back "No it's not, my cock was JUST in there!" Which of course got the reply of "Yes, but now it's not.....and I'm lonely!"

The room shuts up REALLY fast when my team starts the ad-libbing. If you're 'in' our team, you totally get the joke and are laughing along with us. But to outsiders.....well I can't imagine what the hell they're thinking.

3D platformers did not wow me until Super Mario Galaxy.  That was amazing...but yeah...I'm one of those heartless bastards who really didn't like Super Mario 64 all that much.  Super Mario Galaxy, however, is one of the greatest games ever.

and don't forget the golden age of the lucas arts(and other developers) scumm adventure games.. Full throtle, space quest,the roach game, 9(the one put out with help from the rolling stones) ect. stand up to most games today on a design sense(monkey Island two being one of my favorite all time games ever).And lets not forget the days when first person shooters weren't just aliens space marine knock off, ww2 knock offs, or modern warfare knock offs, remember red neck rampage....

It seems like the more the platforms can do for the games, the less games come out that really try to do something new.. Yeah the graphics and gameplay physics blow any 90's game out of the water, but what ever happened to variety, why the fuck are we still  playing game series that first came out of the 90's(I include halo in this statement, if you don't know what I mean, grab an old copy of marathon and tell me that's not master chief)....

GIMMIE SOME'N NEW FOR FUCK SAKE.....

And yes, I do agnolage some newer games that have broken the mold. Pychonauts(the old school lucas arts scum games to thank for that one), katamari damacy, spore(yeah, it's basicaly simms meats ms paint, but still),braid,overlord(which strongly resembles both peter noli-who-gives-a-shit-what-his-last-name-is's fable and his older dongeon lord game) ect.. But for every unique game, there's like ten cookie cutter games shoving them off the shelves.

Oh, and fuck japanese turn based games, fuck them right in the sexualy ambuguise spikey haired perpetualy prepubesent  asses....

Fnordstrum -> RE: Vee-dee-oh Gaymes? (8/13/2009 7:08:16 PM)

I don't have (and don't desire to have) an X-Box, however I do have a PS3, I would be up for some online Tekken, Soul Calibur, or Rock Band (or Guitar Hero) if anyone is interested -- Also Puzzle Quest: Galactrix and Super Puzzle Fighter -- Other than those games I tend to stick to single player stuff though, most recently I beat Valkyria Chronicles, which is a pretty nifty game.

When the PS3 version of DDR comes out (Bloody finally) I'll be up for online play in that too (Assuming it has it, which I believe is a safe assumption)

Lately I've been kind of spending most of my time with Magic, and because I've been getting a ton of hours at work the last few weeks, I've hardly had any time to do much else by the time I'm done checking/bidding on ebay for cards and thinking about what I want to do with my decks / etc. -- I actually put in a couple weeks of vacation the next couple months, just so that I could have some free time to finish some games. (I have at least 10 I haven't even started)

The only PS3 racing game I play is Wipeout HD... Which is a pretty fun game, although I kind of suck at it without pilot assist, heh.

Zork was so silly!

I have a SNES with the original Mario games from the NES. I love that freaking thing.
