Hi all,

I was discussing with this vanilla friend about BDSM, and she asked why someone would enjoy submitting to another.  I came up with this answer, and I thought it was nice enough to share with all.

She is a fan of both Twilight and True Blood, shows that involve vampires, and compared I BDSM to vampires depicted in those shows:

At the core they are predators, they crave something that cannot be taken on equal terms.  But they are also people, with a conscience and a sense of morality.  They also respect and even love the humans they get along with, even if they can also see them as a prey to satiate their needs.  Then inevitably comes the scene where they have to get what they crave, and the human friend/lover will give himself or herself to the vampire.  At this point the human is completely helpless, at the mercy of the vampire.  Yet, s/he knows that the vampire would never that far.   And on that moment, when any ordinary people would see abuse and violence, all that the people who know what is going see is trust.

She said she understood BDSM a lot better, after describing this.  I personally am fed up with vampire shows, but I guess they do have their use ;)

Rock on vampire shows and movies. I am gradually assembling a collection of all the vampire movies made with the exception of the "C" grade blood-fests.

Hmm see I think comparison to vampires could actually be detrimental, yes in some they have the morality you suggest but in many they do not, it depends on the vampire. Also it increases the idea of BDSM = dark fantasy which isn't really something that appeals to me at all

Actually, in explaining to a newcomer, this seems completely appropriate to me -- especially since it's occasionally quite apparent that some participants in WIITWD have the moral compass to care about those who yield to them and some don't, just like the vampires... so it could scare someone who wasn't ready to face the responsibility for picking/choosing among individuals with that broad of a scope of moral compass -- but wouldn't that be better to understand from the get-go?

See Calla if I am explaining it to someone with real interest in it then I go deeper, with personal examples. If I am explaining to people just curious I make it about them, the one that goes down best with girls is something simple like 'have you ever had your nipples bitten' or 'have you ever been handcuffed' then a simple explanation of the pleasure/pain dynamic along with my opinion that all relationships have power exchange.

Though vampires are highly erotic, I think they are also heavily linked to gothic lifestyles, something that many people have abject responses too, I do not really like to imply that all those involved in wiitwd are 'alternative' or whatever, just that it is simply a natural expression for some. It works for me personally, and has actually encouraged experimentation with some of my closer friends. Though I do get the analogy, I personally wouldn't use it
