Aneirin -> Music, it's effects ? (8/15/2009 6:18:52 AM)

What is it, when hearing certain types of music, it initiates an emotional response, one is quietly listening away, and then one gets like a big shivver followed by tears to the eyes and a feeling of ultimate joy ?

I have heard it called an energy experience, maybe even the music hinted at something from the past, a memory even and feelings contained in that memory, but does anyone else have it, and what can you explain it as ?

Louve00 -> RE: Music, it's effects ? (8/15/2009 6:48:41 AM)

I experience this too.  Just as you said, there are some songs that can bring tears to my eyes (try listening to Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey"...I literally am sobbing by the end of the song)   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59BZxgohr9g

Other songs stir emotion too.  Other songs stir memories and smiles and thoughts of good times.  On the same token though, a visual can do the same for me.  As well as a smell.  (The smell of a certain tree blooming down here, reminds me of my first boyfriend and detecting the scent instantly reminds me of him, almost 35 years later!)

I'm not sure what causes this.  I would venture to say its an association thing.  Our brains, thru experiences, preferences, and all sorts of differentials, store 'memories' for us, that a song, smell, or sight can awaken.

It's interesting indeed...but I like it.

I remember reading something about how the music we like is linked to our heart beat.

To be honest the power of music can really scare me, especially if the preferred style is harder angry music, because it can affect emotion and action. Hyped up on angry music can lead to lots of angry actions

Yes I get it a lot, memories, flashes of the past, but a lot of it has to do with the melody and wonderful voice, together can affect me just as much.
Honey is one that makes me blubber too:) also (I cant believe Im gonna cop to this) puff the magic dragon makes me weep. Amazing Grace on the bagpipes, (shiver)
Rock with you(M.Jackson) I always played while getting ready to go out clubbing, it got me in the mood to dance. there are just so many tho
My moods are extremely affected by the music I listen to.

Hate Me By Blue October. I could not listen to this song without crying for the first two months when it came out. I seriously relate to the song and well it said things I couldn't put into words for the past 5 years.

Then they did it again with Jump Rope. The song just makes me remember why I keep getting knocked down..... how else will I learn to get back up again.

I get totally PUMPED when I listen to My Kind of Lover by Billy Squire

I get Lost in a good place when I listen to The Haunting by Kamelot

This song always takes me to Relaxing Places Once in a Lifetime by Wolfshiem

And I could listen to this guy happily for the rest of my life. Andy McKee Drifting and Tight Trite Night are among my favorites.

Oh no, you have got'' Puff the magic dragon'' in my head now, I used to love that song, but have not heard it for years, oh bugger, I got ''Bright Eyes' in my head now, thanks for another ear worm,but perhaps it will make a change from ''Jerusalem''. Yes, all songs that initiate an emotional response, Bright Eyes being that bit where the bunny gets to play bunny  pinball with a car and the looking up at the red sun.

Much of my graduate work was on this study. I have literally an entire bookshelf crammed full of books on this from ancient times to various cultures to a host of modern treatises. Not to mention my thesis.

It's hardly an obscure subject. Go to any major bookstore or library, start reading.

I don't know how to explain any of it, I'm just grateful music, and its effects, exist.

It tears my heart up every time I listen to Blake Shelton's cover of "Goodbye Time".

And, as Lily mentioned, certain music can spark feelings of aggression, but being humans, we have to be able to contain that.

Me too. :) Music is really important to me. That's something I'd be interested in exploring in a play context, too.

SirLost -> RE: Music, it's effects ? (8/15/2009 8:53:14 PM)

I couldn't help getting reminded of A Clockwork Orange and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Second Movement whenever I read about music's effects.

There are some certain songs those depress and almost makes me cry whenever I hear. I was almost going to cry in my seat at theater when the trailer of Watchmen was being shown: The track that was used in trailer was Smashing Pumpkins's  The Beginning is the End is Beginning. My discover of this song was a part of a terrible memory of mine.

anthrosub -> RE: Music, it's effects ? (8/15/2009 9:11:47 PM)

I've had two very unique experiences with music in my life that stand out beyond all others. One was listening to the song, "Have You Heard?" (there I go using them damn quotes again) by The Moody Blues (On the Threshold of a Dream)...the other occurred listening to "Song of the Seas" by Vangelis (Oceanic).

The Moody Blues experience really blind-sided me. There's a note played at a certain point in the song and then it drops an octave and when that happened, something went from the base of my neck right down to the end of my spine like pure physical ecstacy. It was almost frightening it was so intense.

With Vangelis, I felt such a connection to the song it was as if I already knew it even though I was listening to it for the first time in my life. I've experienced that with many of his works.

As a side note and for the record, most people who know of Vangelis mis-pronouce his name. It's "Van-gay'-lis", not "Van-jell'-lis". I have an audio of him speaking where he clarifies this in an interview.

I think ABBA said it best with....Thank you for the Music.

Memory association is a powerful thing, it is often triggered by smells, colours, music or even the way light reflects on the water. Small things we would not consider important are sometimes the things that have the most powerful impact on us. Live every little thing to its fullest.

BKSir -> RE: Music, it's effects ? (8/15/2009 10:39:15 PM)

Music has always played a very central role in my life.  Most songs, I can close my eyes and remember either the first time I heard the song, or some important thing, or even unimportant thing in my life that the song was playing during.  The memories from these songs are as clear and vivid in my mind, as they were when I was standing there the first time.

Songs like Walking In Memphis, when I hear that, I remember laying on my bed, listening to the radio at 3a.m., it was raining lightly outside, mid autumn.  I can tell you exactly how my room was layed out too, what my stereo looked like, I can even remember one of the lights on it was wonky from time to time.

Can You Feel the Love Tonight... yes, from the lion king.  I remember that vividly, very very vividly.  I had just left home to be on my very own for the first time, probably a bit earlier than I should have, in all reality, but, what's done is done.  Well, I was coming to Salt Lake City to be with someone I had met before while out here.  The night I got into town, we went to see the movie.  I remember every last detail about that night, from the shirt he wore, to the burned out light we parked next to at the theatre, and holding eachother during the movie.  I can't help but think of my ex whenever I hear that song, be it good or bad, it always brings a tear to my eye.  And the song Little Bunny Foo Foo also, I always laugh, I remember him standing in the kitchen, cooking whatever it was, just singing it to himself, not even knowing I was there.

Then there's "Freezeframe".  Memories flood back of hanging out with my cousin, she was like my big sister.  Kicking back in her room, much underage drinking, talking shit about the kids at school.  The same memories I get whenever I hear any song from Simple Minds album Once Upon A Time.

That's just a couple minor examples, obviously there are a lot more.... so very very many more.  Hardly one more important than the other in my mind.

Then there are songs that don't hold any particular strong memory, but still get a strong response.  Time In A Bottle is one of those for me.  There's no reason I should react like I do to it, but, I can't help but want to curl up tight and hold everything and everyone I hold dear there with me and never ever let them go every time I hear it.  Or, Hey Mama, by Black Eyed Peas, I just can't help but dance like no one is watching.  Thankfully, no one ever is... I only crank it up loud when no one is home. [:D]  But, I don't even really like rap much, something about the song though, I can't help but move.  Or "Maybe" from Annie, preferably sung by Aileen Quinn.  I just want to bawl my eyes out when I hear it.  I can't even relate to the song.  I'm not an orphan.  I had a pretty decent childhood all things considered actually.  I was never abandoned.  But that song just rips me apart.

I think a lot of it comes down to being able to say that it's a sign of a very well written song, to do things like that.  To ingrane itself into our minds and hearts so well.

Music Mystery.  I would LOVE to read your studies on this sometime. :)
