kttqnp, thank you. I'd like Lasik, but the doc said I'd still have to wear glasses some, so that deflated me some. The glasses-getting-wet, that's what really got me to thinking today; I was outside working, sweat pouring off me like a river, down into my eyes, and onto my glasses... annoying, and when I almost stepped on a water moccasin, potentially deadly.

Even with contacts you have to give your eyes a rest from them and wear glasses from time to time.

I thought I had mentioned that and then realized. NOOOOOOOOOOOPE.  LOL

WHAT LITTLEWONDER POSTED IS VITAL TO REMEMBER!!!!

you only get one pair of eyes p/lifetime.....

Another thing about the Lasik, it can go wrong, though seldom does. A woman I work with had it, and couldn't see for 3 or 4 days; they had to go back and do more work, which fixed it, but still.

Did I mention the muscles in my bronzed forearms flexing, biceps rippling?

Just sayin'.... [8D]

And I ain't married, but that still leaves you on the hook [:(]

soul2share -> RE: Contact lenses (8/16/2009 8:03:50 PM)

Actually, Level. my friend at work had Lasik, they had to go back in and "Correct" it, and now her close up vision is shot.....she has to wear glasses now....it did correct her long distance vision, but still.....if you do decide to get it donemake sure the place that does it is reputable....she did it thru Nationwide vision, and I've had people tell me they won't even go to them for GLASSES, let alne surgery.

I'm a glasses only person.....well, I'd be if I had them...gotta get off my butt before I quit and move....the thought of sticking anything in my eye just makes my stomach do a slow roll sideways......and surgery?????  Oh HELL NO!

Level -> RE: Contact lenses (8/16/2009 8:09:27 PM)

soul, the doc that I see is top-notch; he does surgery here locally, as well as at Baylor or Rice, and he taught at Johns Hopkins. Still... as Greedy said, we only get one pair of eyes, and I am very protective of mine.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Contact lenses (8/16/2009 8:10:40 PM)

I had some extra money when it was time to get new glasses, so I asked about & got contacts.  I loved them, I loved looking at my face & seeing it clearly for the first time in my life.  Unfortunately, I'm old, so I wear bifocals.  That meant that I had to wear reading glasses with the contacts.  Turns out I couldn't see my hands nor whatever I was eating.  So instead of wearing really cool glasses up on my nose, i was always wearing reading glasses down on my nose which made me look infinitely older.  I gave up the contacts.[:(]

As far as the Lasik surgery is concerned, I would love to have that done, but I'm too worried that I would lose my sight completely.  This is a fairly common worry among those of us who have never really seen clearly since we were born.

If I were you, I would give them a try.  You never know what your experience might be.  They might just change your whole life!! [8D]

kttqnp -> RE: Contact lenses (8/16/2009 8:12:20 PM)

I'm sure Lasik is like any other surgery and things can go wrong, but all I know is that my results were excellent.  There was very little discomfort and the recovery period was short.  My surgery was almost 10 years ago, and I'm sure many advances have been made since then.  I don't know your age, but it's true that Lasik cannot correct for presbyopia, or the need for reading glasses as we get older.  In fact, I'm wearing my reading glasses now as I type, but to me, it's much preferable to being practically legally blind.  And monovision is an option for many people - that's wearing one contact lens to correct for nearsightedness if presbyopia develops after the operation.  As with almost all advice given in these forums, your mileage may vary.

I'm debating on whether to get rid of my glasses, and get some contacts. Who among you have done the same? Are you glad? Ambivalent? What are the pros and cons of contacts?

Thanks in advance.

Don't get rid of your glasses, keep them.  Try the contacts!!!  If you stick with having contacts, you would still need your glasses when tired, when sick, when you have an eye infection.

Daddysredhead -> RE: Contact lenses (8/16/2009 8:59:15 PM)

Levelicious,

I started wearing glasses at age 9, then changed to soft contacts at 12, then hard contacts at 19.  I wore hard contacts for ten years because I developed an allergy to the soft ones.  The hard contacts kept my vision from changing as fast as it did with the soft ones.

In August 1999, I had LASIK.  That was the best decision I ever made.  My vision, without correction, was 20/2000.  The chances of it getting to 20/40 (legally able to drive without corrective lenses) was about 80%, while getting to 20/20 was about 60%.  Anything was an improvement over having a 6" span of vision from the surface of my eye without glasses or contacts.  I had the procedure, could see the clock on the wall across the surgery room, went home, took a nap, woke up and was amazed that I could see so many things that I had never been able to see without glasses or contacts upon waking.  The next day, my vision was tested, and I was at 20/40.  Three months later, I went to the doctor for follow up, and it was 20/20, and has been ever since.  My surgeon said I was one of his miracle patients.  I'm very grateful.  I think once you get over the "ick" factor of having something touch your eye, contacts won't be a problem at all, and it could very well be liberating for you.

All the best in your decision.

HOLY CRAP!!! And I thought mine was bad at 20/400!

Go for the contacts, Levelicious. I went from glasses to contacts at age 16, and have had no major problems with them in the last 24 years. As has been said, the care of them becomes second nature very quickly, as does the touching your eyes thing, lol.

You all get smooches. [;)]

VirginPotty -> RE: Contact lenses (8/17/2009 7:05:26 AM)

I first tried contacts about 15 yrs ago (damn, that long???) and I was lazy about cleaning them.......popping them out of my eyes straight into the lens case. I ended up almost losing my right eye as a result. Not just the vision, the whole damn eye was going to be scooped out :( Thankfully it was caught in time and I just had aggressive treatment for several months and the vision is no worse.
I started w/contacts again about 2 years ago when I became a driver for the FD. The sun visors are TOO BIG to keep adjusting. (Have to duck each time) so I got disposable contacts so I could wear sunglasses. I only wear them on weekends when I'm out during the day or when I go out in the evenings.
I hate 'em and will be getting the glasses that turn dark in the sun on my next visit.[>:]

just wondering...why did you wait till you were in your 50's to try contacts?

yanno...you might want to consider getting a magnetized overlay that fits right over y6our glasses rather than the tint.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Contact lenses (8/17/2009 11:07:10 AM)

They're called transition lenses, and I had them when I was around 16-17 and I don't remember why I wanted them and I found it annoying that if you ever wanted to pose in a picture, the camera's flash made them tint and then you looked dumb, in another wise good picture.
