Well now we know who to blame if it doesn't go away in Israel.

I dont see a problem with this, it wont cure swine flu but if thats what religious leaders want to do, its no skin off my nose. I`m sure the Israeli health authorities are doing all they can to combat swine flu.

All they've done is take a bet. If Swine flu reappears in winter they lose the bet and if it vanishes from Israel they win the bet and some easily lead people will attribute it to them.

Politesub don't you feel sickened by a group using a global catastrophe to further their cause? Do you remember that immediately after the swine flu headlines in the UK an addendum was added to a Dettol spray advert to mention that fact 'It also killed 100% of flu viruses including swine flu." I felt irate that a company would do this just to garner some sales from the hysteria and in a similar respect these religious figures are doing the same.

FullCircle, many companies look at ways to thrive on peoples misery, It annoys me but less so than companies supplying free education packs to schools and distorting there own products. IE cereal companies pointing out how much fibre a meal contains, yet forgetting to mention salt and sugar levels. Religious leaders have way to much say for my liking, yet they are free to have that say, just as I am free to ignore it. The only sad thing is that many of their followers will believe such blatant nonsense.

Obama was apparently waiting in the wings to get the Rabbi's blessings.

quote:

'We are God's partners in matters of life and death'

A reader points out that President Obama's call with the rabbis today — as recorded in Rabbi Jack Moline's and other clerics' Twitter feeds — freights health care reform with a great deal of religious meaning, and veers into the blend of policy and faith that outraged liberals in the last administration.

"We are God's partners in matters of life and death," Obama said, according to Moline (paging Sarah Palin...), quoting from the Rosh Hashanah prayer that says that in the holiday period, it is decided "who shall live and who shall die."

The president ended the call by wishing the rabbis "shanah tovah," or happy new year — in reference to the High Holidays a month from now.

Sadly, it sounds like the head of the health ministry has been pondering just that: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1081546.html

I get it, so they are just doing this whole prayer thing to further their cause? So then they don't really beleive their prayers will work? And you know this how? Did these people confide in you that they were really just pulling the peoples legs and don't really believe in the power of prayer or are you just assuming this based on your own experiences? Does this go for any religious leader who says he is going to pray for something or just the rabbis?

For me, I would say the same about any religion, prayers wont cure anything.

Yes, I'm glad you now see the light.

Well a combination of two things really ahem:

1) Rabbis flying around in a plane praying will have no greater effect that rabbis standing on the ground praying. Will it? Are they closer to god being in the air? Where is the logic that it will do more good praying flying through the air than on the ground? Obviously rabbis praying on the ground isn't such a big news story and wouldn't reach half as many people as the weird idea they think doing it on a plane would help more. Thus it is a publicity stunt or all praying from this point on should only be conducted in mid flight. Those without a passport are not entitled to speak with god at all and in any case he just can't hear you since you are thousands of feet benefit the howling rabbis and them praying is blocking out your god signal. Access to god: denied!

2) Traditional worship has been dropping year on year and many religious leaders speak of reengaging with the public or ways they could show the importance of the church in people’s lives.

All of them, they all lie the same way. Hear of them speak of their need to engage and then see the way in which they try.

How do you feel about political leaders who bring god into the equation...

I see it as a reflection of the reality that some people can only be convinced of something by the politician pandering to their religious beliefs, make no mistake this is what he is doing. He may also personally believe in the thing he is saying but this is where me and Obama part company and why I will never be a popular politician. I could never pretend I believed such ignorance even if believing it lead to a greater good.

I'm not really against the idea of god, I'm against the idea of organised religion. I think sometimes that if organised religion didn't exist we would all have our own unique idea of what this life was about i.e. we would have billions of ideas on the subject rather than millions and therefore they'd be more chance one of us would have the right answer. I just wish people would think outside of the restrictions that have been placed upon them by people that probably don't as an organisation have a better answer than that of an individual. In true group thinking you bounce ideas off of one another you don't simply believe someone has a better answer because they are in a superior position in the group.
