I'd be interested to hear some american definitions of the word liberal....

Over here being liberal is being in favour of personal freedom.....big on freedom of speech, freedom to shag whoever you like, eat/inhale whatever you like....basically the idea that people should be able to do whatever they want so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

In the usa it appears to mean....confusingly....left wing, and a lot of other crap as well....I end up defending some strange positions when I tell americans I consider myself a hardcore liberal....anymerican like to share their views on what liberal views are?

Did you know that in the States, "shag" is a variety of carpet with no sexual connotations whatever on the word?

I've spoken with enough american girls to know they know full well I'm not thinking about carpet. And we have the variety over here too.

No that would be shagpile this is what happens when you Americans shorten things it completely changes the meaning. Is it too hard to add the word pile to the end of shag for the love of god?

Not so sure that gives an accurate picture of Liberalism in England.

The old Liberalism: the Non-Conformist conscience/the Cobdenite belief in free trade and peace/the preference for international law to Realpolitik/the aversion to excessive military spending and the historic dislike of a big army/the preoccupation with parliamentary reform.

The new Liberalism of the 20th century: the concern with redistributive public finance and social matters.

Both are relevant today and Liberalism is a spectrum of political thought. Not all liberals are enamoured with state interference in social matters; just as not all liberals are convinced by free trade.

I would say the strands that unite liberals since the coinage of the term are a dislike of a big army and a less bellicose outlook of the world (when compared with conservatives) - which leads us to prefer international law.

First of all, we don't believe in working. We believe that the government should tax the rich and send us the money so we can buy big televisions to spend our days watching Michael Moore film fests on PBS.

Second, we believe that in addition to taxing rich people and passing the money on to us, government's primary role is to pass laws forbidding people from doing anything we don't think they should be doing, such as smoking tobacco or owning firearms. It is, however, important to note that government has no business whatsoever passing any laws that prevent us from doing what we want to do, like smoking marijuana and having abortions.

Third, nothing anyone does is their fault, unless they're a Republican. Anything a Republican does is their fault, and in fact, everything anyone who is not a Republican does is probably a Republican's fault somehow. Anyone who is not a Republican deserves an unlimited number of second chances, because they wouldn't have done it in the first place if the Republicans hadn't screwed things up so badly. All Republicans, on the other hand,  should go to jail everytime they... well... they should just all go to jail, period. It would make everything a lot easier.

Fourth, you don't know what you're talking about. Nobody does. Except us. Anytime a conservative and a liberal disagree, the conservative is wrong, because they are not a liberal. And don't even try to tell me this doesn't make sense, because like i said, you're wrong. Because you don't know what you're talking about.

Fifth, schools are not for learning. They are for building childrens' self-esteem, so that they can be confident and happy in life. They don't need to learn anything - if you raise them right, they're going to grow up to be liberals anyway, and they'll know everything they need to know. The grading system should be abolished, and all children should be passed automatically.

And sixth, we want you to pay for our health care. Because we deserve it. Any kind of health care we need, anytime, the best we can find. But we don't want your grandmother to get any health care at all, because she's going to die anyway, and the sooner she does the more money we'll have to spend on plastic surgery and hair transplants for illegal aliens.

I think that about covers it. If i left anything out, I'm sure there are a few posters who'll fill in the blanks.

No, thank you, ma'am. Popcorn is not on the list. Liberals prefer wine and cheese.

I guess that covers it pretty well Panda, except you left out speech restrictions. A bit sarcastic, but those are basically the modern Left/Liberal/ Progressive goals. As opposed to the older meaning of the term Liberal.

Except for a missing "h" in the snipped statement, I think you answered that quite perfectly, Panda.

In general, in America, the word "liberal" is a verbal flag that means someone's about to say some appallingly mean-spirited things.

To add to NG's post, there is a difference between being 'liberal' and having liberal political ideals. Also there is a difference between The Librals and the Libral Democrats (change of politics over time)

I want to specify, DC, that I'm not being at all sarcastic.

Over here, "liberal" has come to mean, as it's most commonly used, to mean "not fundamentalist conservative." Its connotation is negative, and its intent is to paint anything not hard-core right-wing as extreme--including any moderate positions. It also means "stupid, clueless, naive, and out of touch with reality."

It's a way to dismiss alternate approaches without actually presenting an argument.

Whoever those people are they had to settle for:

1% of the richest owning 40% of the wealth and the next 15% owning 80% of the wealth.

The 50% poorest of them owning 1% of the stock.

Working longer hours for less money...taking 2nd and 3rd jobs to pay their living and debts.

Watching a systematic robbery of the taxpayer by wall street and billionaires.

A continuation of multi-trillion war spending.

Watching our country go from a creditor nation to a debtor nation now already on the verge of 'bankrupcy' and borrowing some est. collectively $15 Billion/DAY.

Seeing their medical insurance sky-rocket while covering less...and ultimately...

...dying younger than in over 40 other countries.

Simple...money money money...you are liberal if you spend it and conservative if you don't...but really do but say you don't.

After a bit of pondering on the shag carpet concept and calling to mind a few of the females I have carnal knowledge of. I would wager to say I've come to a conclusion as to word association in this case.
