Sounds like the valve that diverts the water to the shower is different than the handle you replaced it with. Do as suggested and go back to Lowes and tell them how the old handle worked, and ask if they have one, or the other method is a pain in the ass because you need to replace the valve connector. There are a huge amount of home fix it sites you can try as well. If you are going to replace any valves, do not forget the teflon tape and plumbers goop/putty, they are both your friend when doing plumbing.

So I am a new home owner of an approximately 18 year old townhouse. It seems as if my shower handle thingy is broken. So off to Lowes I went and bought a new one and I'm sitting here with the box open along with my home repair book and all I can think of is wtf am I doing? I've located the main water shut off so that's a good thing. Do I actually attempt to do this on my own or should I break down and ask the stb ex for help????? I'd love to be able to do this on my own just because it'd be a cool thing to do, but I don't want to fuck up the plumbing in the wall. Help!!!!
I'm actually just looking for encouragement. How hard is something like this to do? I'm going from one of those old pull out and then turn for the hot and cold type of handles to the new kind where you just turn it on. I'm figuring that I need some type of adaptor or new kind of manifold pipe.
Blah...just rambling.

No....you go to the Yellow Pages thingie and you call one of those handyman thingies.

It appears as if I need to get a new cartridge.

Delta faucet? Half the time all you really need is a thirty cent O ring, but instead they make you buy a new cartridge for $40. Repairs are fast, but expensive.

Sounds like  when i replaced my front door knob   -   in a 60 year old house.

Did you know that door knobs are different now than 60 years ago?  Did you know that you can't buy a replacement door knob? Did you know that you can really screw up the door - to the point that the whole door needs to be replaced?

anyone know a good place to buy a door    - and someone who will put it in???????????????????????

My Grandma's house was built back when they didn't fully understand the electricity wasn't as relient on gravity as plumbing....meaning all her old fuse boxes were on the second floor, all leading down......yeah, that was a FuN one to work on

Aileen, don't know whether it was 2 something your time when you posted, but a couple of rules I try to follow when doing plumbing.

1. Always start early in the day, to make sure you can make the minimum three trips to the hardware store.
2. Stay on good terms with a good plumber who will come and fix what you weren't able to finish before the hardware store closed.

I am accomplished at home repair, but I HATE plumbing. I would much rather put up a fence, or put in a window than do plumbing. I hope your fix was successful and/or you have another working shower in your house.

This reminds me of the time I was helping my cousin on his newly purchased home, it was probably 20 years old at the time. The valve to turn off the toilet in the master bath was corroded and stuck in the open position, and we had to take the toilet out to put down a new floor. I got the old valve off, took it one of the hardware stores which was usually quite helpful. A kid with rings in his nose and lips asked if he could help, when I showed him the valve, he asked what kind of an engine that spark plug came out of. I was laughing so hard, I could barly drive back.

OOoooooohhhhhhhh    -   screw-in fuses?   because half of my house is screw-in and half is regular.
Makes it interesting to check fuses.

Aileen, when you are free- please drop in.  You can give me some ideas on how to wrap up my umteen unfinished house projects.  :-)

Ya know with home upgrades you can spend a fortune on it- every square inch- .99 cents to over $300.

BTW-  my brother is out of the country- so he does not know it yet- but he just bought another house.  His offer was accepted - my sister went in with payment.  So now he will be fixing up 2 monster houses.   He really is putting himself in a tight corner- he doesnt think so- But I do.    The entire house flipping trade has changed.

If you engineer it long enough, you find it may not need doing, afterall.
