As USA bashing seems to be coming right back into fashion, perhaps we would do well to remind some why so many people on this planet are willing to risk everything to come here.

Former migrant worker about to blast into space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — He toiled in California's farm fields alongside his Mexican migrant worker parents and didn't learn English until he was 12. Now Jose Hernandez, NASA astronaut, is about to rocket into orbit.

Rich, good luck dragging any positive comments out of the kvetchers.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 6:33:53 PM)

How about, "good for him, but what's the big deal?" Maybe if I understood whatever point you two are trying to make, I could do a little better.

Send all the illegals to Mars?

Level -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 6:45:43 PM)

Panda, I'm referring to those who seem unable to say anything positive about America; looking at this nation through rose-colored glasses is useless, but it's hardly the heart of all that's evil, either.

TheHeretic -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 6:55:40 PM)

When have I let the sort of replies I'm likely to get stop me, Level?  [:D]

Them that hates us aren't going to stop, them that are spoiled rotten by thinking we are the norm aren't going to see what is remarkable.  In between, a few might go "wow."  I'll post for the last on this one.

Level -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 6:59:49 PM)

I hear you. [;)] Thanks for posting it, it's a cool story.

No offense,  but the point is still kind of lost on me. Of course I'm happy as hell for the guy that he got to live his dream and become an astronaut, but I really don't see it as a meaningful commentary on America. I find it very moving simply because it's a human story, not because it's an America story. I don't see it as any kind of counterpoint to criticism of America.

I don't want to rain on your parade, though. I used to be pretty patriotic myself in olden times, so if it floats  your boats, you guys go ahead and enjoy it.  Hopefully, we can at least all agree that for that one guy, it's a pretty fantastic story.

Level, I happen to love this country. But one of the things that I love about it is that it has improved as people who loved it worked to improve it. Blacks are no longer kept as property. Women are no longer denied the vote. Gay couples can no longer be arrested for what they choose to do in the privacy of their own homes.

None of this was accomplished by the "Love It Or Leave It" mentality. It was accomplished by those who cared enough to face what was bad in this country and make it better.

No, we are not the heart of evil. But we have our dark history and we still have a ways to go before we can rest and gloat over our perfection. Do not mistake caring enough to make those changes necessary to form, as our founding fathers stated "a more perfect union" with a lack of patriotism. Remember, this country you claim to love was built by those who were not satisfied with self inflicted blindness or problems unsolved.

I enjoyed it.  Thank you for posting it.

Irishknight -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 9:10:12 PM)

I think some of you seem to miss the fact that someone is pointing out that there is still some good going on in this country. People are too ready to label us as the "evil Americans" and to blame us for everything bad. We're still doing something right... at least for this guy. Maybe that should show us the hope that we have a chance to get back on track.

tazzygirl -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 9:17:54 PM)

im not "worldly" knowledgable.. so i will ask a question and preface it with the following

knowing the USA is not the only country where such an event could happen.... what other countries would it be possible to have such an event occur?

TheHeretic -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 9:22:13 PM)

"The land of opportunity" just doesn't mesh with "America baaa-aad," I suppose.  How remarkable is the USA?  We just elected the son of Kenyan goat-herder to be the most powerful public figure on earth, and when we fire him for incompetence in another 3 years, 3 months, it won't take a bloody coup to get him to leave.  I think that is pretty cool too.

Where else could this sort of stuff even be dreamed of?

None.

Didn't you read the title of the thread?

We have the best god-durned country in the world, the best health care, the best economy, the best education system, the best political system.

Hell-fire, woman, don't you know the USA is the god-durned greatest at everything?

Just about every other democracy in the world, I suppose. What do you think, we're the only country in the world where the people don't wear animal skins and live in caves? Jesus, this thread is getting more ridiculous by the hour.

Let me check my watch.....wow...three minutes and forty seven seconds without some conservative turning any conversation into a "Bash Obma Fest". I'm impressed.

TheHeretic -> RE: Only in America (8/24/2009 9:37:28 PM)

Pay no mind to him, Tazzy.  He just likes to dream up imaginary things to claim I said, and that he feels competent to respond to.  [;)]

I hate to poke a pin in the baloon, but one wonderful (and it is a wonderful) story does not a trend make. It is like saying that because someone wins the lottery, gambling is a sound plan for financial well being.

Just about every other democracy in the world,

I guess we should narrow that down to other democracies that have a space program, and grant citizenship to the children of migrant workers.  How many does that leave?
