It's a very sad day for Politics.
I'm very saddened by the death of Teddy Kenedy.
God rest his soul.
Human beings of that quality are rare.

I would expect nothing more at the moment given the quality of what happens on other threads.

On the plus side, he and Mary Jo are reunited after 40 years.

I'm willing to change my post above to "De mortuis nil nisi bonum."  Alas, no edit button is available.

Allow me to be the first:

"He was always on the wrong side of any issue that supports traditional American values. His aid to the 'poor' people was to always give them everything so they may WORK for nothing. Yeah, he wanted to give, give, give..but when you give to those who not contribute, you take from others who do..he was good at that.
I just hope worse does not replace him. His last effort was to get laws charged so they could 'quickly' replace him..and do you not think he personally directed whom that replacement should be?! Guess too risky to let the PEOPLE ELECT his replacement..might actually elect someone who might work FOR the TAXPAYER for a change!"

I'm sorry, but my values ARE traditional American values, as I have lived in this country and worked in this country for my entire life, as did my parents and their parents before them... which makes it pretty doggone traditional, and frankly, Senator Kennedy was on the -right- side of many issues which were important to many Americans, including the Americans With Disabilities Act, which actually allows people like ME to continue to work and pay taxes. Who are -you- to decide what are 'traditional american values'?.. shouldn't that read "He was always on the wrong side of MY american values"?

Truly peeved now,
DC

Why should we give it a rest?  The man got away with murder.   To my mind he finally paid, with his disease, and his death, albeit too little too late.

Well, for one reason, you don't seem to have the first clue about what defines murder.

I'd also be willing to bet that Mary Jo is in a much better place than Ted. All of that money doesn't mean to much where he is now.

I can't kick a man when he's down and dead. Even though I disagreed with many of his ideas, I'll admit that he did do some good for the USA.

I know that brain cancer is something I would wish upon anyone.

Instead of making a bunch of tempting wise cracks and jokes at Ted, I know that none of us here are perfect. Instead, I will repectfully say that I hope Ted's entire life of goals, achievements, failures, and mistakes inspire every politician to learn from Ted's politicial career and decide to always do the right thing.

The phrase "traditional American values" is an empty one that gets trotted out at election times. In regards to the long serving Senator who just passed away, here is an excerpt from "Time" magazine.

"In the Senate, Ted Kennedy Still Rules"

By Jay Newton-Small/Washington Saturday, May. 17, 2008

"Kennedy's best years in the Senate came after his presidential run," former Majority Leader Tom Daschle told me later in the week. "The lion that he is today is in part due to his presidential race but even more so due to all of the legislative achievements he's orchestrated in the Senate in the decades since."

Indeed, almost every bipartisan bill in the last seven years has had Kennedy's signature on it, from No Child Left Behind and the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, to pension reform and a collective bargaining bill for first responders passed by the Senate just last week. Kennedy's legislative belief has always been to "never let the perfect be the enemy of the good," as he's said on many occasions. Even with bills that had major flaws, such as immigration reform, he believed it was better to pass something and then work to fix it later on. It was thanks to Kennedy's willingness to work with the other side that the immigration legislation came as close as it did to passage two years in a row. Kennedy "is a legendary lawmaker and I have the highest respect for him," Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for President and Kennedy's partner on immigration reform, said in a statement Saturday. "When we have worked together, he has been a skillful, fair and generous partner."

Do you not believe that Mary Jo Kopechne had a soul as well? Do you believe that her life is worth less than Ted Kennedy's life?

If anyone else in the U.S., never mind a politician who had the influence of the Kennedy name and the money that backed the Kennedy name up, if any other person in the U.S. had left a woman to drown they'd have been in jail.

And justly so IMHO.
