You know, I don't understand why people will accept six 24-hour days, but can't accept the idea that the earth is flat, and that the sky is a dome.

That is what their faith teaches them.  So, either there is something wrong with their faith or the bible.

Status: offline 		Of course, no one can accept that the Bible is written almost entirely symbolically and as a metaphor, and was never, ever, intended to be seen as literal.  Then again, no one who says they see the Bible as literal actually lives as if it is.

Creationism is not science.  It is a religious belief.  It doesn't "contradict science".  It is like suggesting a motorcycle contradicts the designated hitter in baseball.

I believe in God.  I believe in Jesus.  I also acknowledge many scientific findings.  When you are a little child you believe your parents are magic, but as you grow, your mind and attitudes mature, and you learn that parents are not magic.  They do not cease to be your parents by the process of your mental development.  God is - and that does not change because we mapped the human genome.

If you're seriously willing to accept the possibility that reality-as-perceived is the problem, then the age of the universe is whatever God decides it is, and God can change His mind from moment to moment.

Knowledge of "earthly matters" is impossible, and irrelevant - and, in fact, sinful - except when God says it isn't. Of course, God can simply change God's mind, and even if God decides that knowledge of "earthly matters" is sinful, God can still compel you to desire such knowledge.

"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the Earth? Speak, if you know!"

Job is the clearest we ever come to understanding God. Everything else is wishful thinking.

Do you have proof God did not intend for the bible to be taken literally?  For quite some time it was.  There are 50,000,000 + people who would argue it is gods literal word.  How could so many people be wrong?

After all in the Early 1900s the bible was openly taught in every school in one fashion or another.

No, I honestly do not.  However, I have been told in the last 2 weeks over 30 times that one can not question or critically examine faith of others no matter how looney.

So, I posted a 3-4 out of 50 articles backed, believed and supported by people whose faith tell them these ideas are true.

Faith is a belief held in lack or inspite of evidence.  Faith is an emotional not logical commitment.  Emotional decisions can and quickly escalate to friction and violence.  In no other sphere of human knowledge, influence or study would a appeal to faith be be accepted to establish a truth.  No sphere but the one which markets it the most - Religion

Faith in Jesus is just as silly and unsupported as the faith the Creationists Museum has, or Pastors attacking Obama, Or private citizens running for public office based on wacky ideas, or Jews praying to eliminate the swine flu or a Florida governor flying to Israel to pray hurricanes do not destroy his state.

That was my point - sorry.  My point was the majority of the public, unless they spend their time searching never find these wacky ideas.  However, the fact most people have not heard them obviously does not mean they do not happen several times a day on a national basis.

What I've always found the most amusing aspect of creationism is what was in the link:


The only legitimate marriage is the joining of one man and one woman. God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage. Any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, incest, fornication, adultery, pornography, etc., are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex.


Now, if you literally believe the story of Adam and Eve, which the link supports as fact, then we are all products of incestuous relationships.

Status: offline 		Unfortunately my entry compared the rate of absorption of paper towels, I was going to prove pages from the bible are less porous than that of toilet paper.

My second entry showing how a penis erupts also didn't go down well for some reason.

Considering that you recently advised a poster on another thread to take a course in logic I am assuming that you have.

And if you have, you should recognize the fallacies in your argument.


The Burden of Proof


Negative claims in the context of religion are very commonly of this form:
  • "You can not prove that there is no deity"
  • "You can not prove that there are no miracles"
These claims are asserted by those holding belief in the existence of such phenomena.  They do not usually assert such criticisms against those who claim that there are no phenomena such as those not believed in by the defenders of the existence of a deity or miracles.  For example believers in deity or miracles do not criticize those who claim that there are no tooth fairies or that there are no leprechauns.

The theists appears to think that the critic of theism is claiming that there are no deities and that such a claim can be proven or has been proven.  What is actually being claimed by most critics of the claims that there are deities or miracles is that "There is not sufficient evidence to establish the existence of a deity or a miracle."  or that "It has not been proven that there are deities or miracles."

The burden of proof is on the claimant of the positive claim that an entity X does exist.  The critic of the person making the positive claim that an entity X does exist is asking for evidence in support of that claim and that the evidence be relevant and sufficient to warrant or support the claim.

There still are flat earthers out there and I've always wondered if step 2 of creationism (after biology was abolished) would be to prove the earth is flat.

Status: offline 		Technically speaking it is all a matter of scale if the earth is bound within the universe and the universe is bound on a membrane where the range of z co-ordinate is infinitesimally smaller than that of the x or y co-ordinates then the earth for all intents and purpose is flat.

and we are also flat, I rest my case.

Is a piece of paper flat yes, I further rest my case.

Can you make a case for this? It seems to me that it would be difficult to deduce exactly what the authors of this book intended as we have no idea who they were.

No, it sure isn't a science. But that doesn't seem to stop the fundies from promoting it as a science in an attempt to discredit biology.

Status: offline 		RML, thats a rather meaningless link. I am not most theists, nor is Esinn most anti theists (or wahtever term you like). We are both real people who have put real ideas into the debates.

Esinn, posits that God does not exist. He thinks he has proved it with the rules of logic. Posted it over and over. Has nothing to do with what you posted.

I would never attempt to say I can prove God exists. Becuase I can't.
