subbisherri -> excessively long acronyms (8/28/2009 3:19:30 PM)

This might not be posted in the right place, but I couldn't figure anywhere else...

I received an email funding solicitation from my (not yet completed) alma mater for Camp Fyrefly. Now I don't have an issue with what the Camp does, or their requests for funding, but the acronym they have is: LGBTTQI&A.

I challenge ANYONE to try to figure out what the heck that is (they did give the long version, but I really wanna know if anyone out there can grok it).

Maybe we can revert to first principles: straight and other?

Aylee -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/28/2009 3:43:45 PM)

lesbian
gay
bisexual
trans-identified
Two-Spirit
queer
intersex

allied

While I am not sure that I "grok" as Micahel Valentine Smith might, I would definatly disagree with the categories "straight" and "other."

I think that this list sound rather inclusive.  The problem with "other" is its "otherness."  "Other" is not a good place to be.  You might check out some of the stuff written about it.  The Second Sex springs to mind for some reason.  [8|]

While accuracy in descriptors is important, I think that some people take it rather far and the P.C.-everything movement is tiresome.

[:'(]  I still do not like the use of "other" as a descriptor.  So there!  Nahhh!

Maybe straight and non-straight.

But. . . the problem comes in that some of those terms are genetic references and some are not.

I assume it's leather gay bisexual transgender no idea about the T Q could be queer, and no idea about the rest.

No, I am not "other",  and forcing LGBTTA people to all assure ONE label, would be like asking ALL s-types to be called slave. I am not a slave to anyone but the one who owns me. And I wont be referred to as such by anyone else. And I am not straight, I am not gay either. I am Bi-sexual.

Nothing is black and white, I'm sure not.

pyroaquatic -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/28/2009 9:16:38 PM)

HELLO. I am Pyroaquatic.

I will eat your acronyms for lunch, breakfast, but not dinner for I need a large diet of labels.

I swear I am not a logophage. This nonsense of which you speak.

*swats*

It is fine if one is discovering how one is orientated. Other than that... I think I have found myself. You?

SteelofUtah -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/28/2009 9:18:13 PM)

DomImus, pretty sure the A is for A-sexual (I'm about 98% sure on that)

pompeii -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/28/2009 10:22:10 PM)

lally2 -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/29/2009 5:45:01 AM)

because im being especially slow today i had a problem working out what the thread was about, never mind the long list of letters  now that i have worked it out -, yeah, im with the FFS crowd, for what its worth [:)]

to be honest, it wasnt that long ago that i worked out some very very simple ones, like IMO [&o] - its true! (in my defence i didnt really apply myself to most of them [&:]).

my dyslexic brain wants to add in little words and does and i never can work them out easily.  so i tend to just ignore them.

.............................so im not even gonna try Steels acronym [:D]

peachgirl -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/29/2009 7:50:20 AM)

thanks, Bita.

gentlemanprince -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/29/2009 8:48:48 AM)

If I can't easily decipher the acronym, I don't give money.

CalifChick -> RE: excessively long acronyms (8/29/2009 11:47:46 AM)

Instead of "straight" and "other"... why not "non-straight" and "other"?

As much as I dislike PC, I dislike social exclusion and stigmatizing people even more.

Sometimes i feel like walking round with a list of ingredients and an instruction manual.
