It appears from this message according to moderator11 that I am unable in the future to post any links to other websites. I don’t think that’s fair because other people do it and if I can’t do it that means I can’t verify or corroborate or support my position on an issue with evidence. Unfortunately, some other people in these discussions have requested links to verify opinions but if I can’t do it my ability to support my views will be significantly limited or stifled.

And since I’ve been told this is the last time I’m going to be warned I assume I am being threatened with deletion of my membership from this website. Anyway, if I disappear I just wanted some people to know why.

That’s all, except to say I had a link showing a well written article about Obama actually having reduced the budget deficit and how the Congressional budget office or CBO calculates their projection using worst-case scenarios which may be unrealistic but I can’t post the link.

You can read the message I received from the moderator below.

Perhaps you should reread that message; it specifically asks you to quit "flooding" with "link after link".

Well your trying to punch a brick wall with this one Brain. And trust me I know. But the letter you posted does not say "I am unable in the future to post any links to other websites." It says,"Stop flooding threads with link after link and pastes of offsite content." And you are the only one doing that. I would imagine if you made a point in your own words, and then when challenged on a specific fact gave a link that backed your claim, no one would mind.

Hello Brain

There's two issues here.

The first issue relates to copyright. You do realize that you are distributing articles without permission of the author which in itself is infringement of copyright and if you are doing this from the United States is actually a criminal offence. You might not be arrested but it could lead to CM being prosecuted and having to close the website down.

The second issue relates to content, or more specifically original content. This website like any other is bound by local and international copyright law and provides this message board with the intention that most of the content is original.

From what I have seen of your postings they tend to contain very little original content and seem to be a direct link, cut and paste or are based on someone else's article with a brief comment from you.

This isn't a political commentary site and that area of the boards have been provided so users can discuss between themselves issues of a political or religious nature.

What stops you from posting original content? Reading your profile you're an off the wall type of guy, I'm sure you can think of something interesting to say.

As an aside have you ever thought about becoming a political commentator, perhaps on a more political site where they go in for that sort of thing more?

And is it really too much to ask that you consider changing your style of posting?

ETA: You are based in Canada but the website is registered in the United States and is owned and there copyright infringement is a criminal offence. This is why you have been asked to stop as there is a risk that CM could be prosecuted.

Brain...most everyone that has argued a point passionately has received one or more of those type messages. Unless you want the awaiting approval by your name...just reevaluate how you have been posting and see if you can understand what the moderator is talking about.

Don't let your pride overshadow good sense. Others can get their points across without being banned …you can too.

Perhaps there is hope for Brain yet, thanks to ModXI. I never accessed any of his links anyway. I wonder how many people did?

These two issues are essentially the same issue. If posting external links to other content was a copyright issue we would not be allowed to do it at all I suspect. Most of us would be guilty, including you and I. Google themselves would be the biggest violator on the Web. Their sole purpose is to provide links to other content. The note was probably about posting style as opposed to external links and Mod 11 does have a valid point.

Those 2 sentences appear to contradict one another.

As one who has been on the receiving end of 11's ire several times, I have to say that, in the majority of cases, once I'd calmed down, chilled out, and taken stock, I agreed I'd gone in too hard, or been otherwise out of order in what I'd said. On the one occasion (recently, as it happens) that I still disagreed with the "diagnosis", it turned out to be a misunderstanding, easily rectified, by me.

If I were you I'd just sleep on it, consider it calmly tomorrow, and accept that it is what it is.

I also thought, while considering the previous situation, that it can't be easy being a mod. A pretty thankless task, I would imagine, and an unpaid one to boot, if I understand correctly.

I just did a quick scan of the last 5 threads you started. All since yesterday and all cut and pastes with a link with no comment from you at all. I've made posts like that also but not 5 in twenty four hours. I suspect that is why you got "the tap", to invoke a Seinfeld-ism.

I’m not sure I understand this entirely 100%. I’ll have to think about this some more as to what I’m doing wrong exactly. I do understand, at least I think I do, about copyright and not to post too much of a story in an article, but I am confused because I have seen other people post entire articles and I don’t understand how they can do it and nothing happens, or at least I think nothing happens.

I’m certainly not interested in causing any problems for this website, legal problems of any kind whatsoever, so if I just post the heading of the article and the link that is okay? Is it okay because that’s what Google does and that is legal and appropriate? I think I understand the issue about 75% of the way but I don’t understand it entirely 100% and I am a little confused about it. But like I said I will think about it some more and maybe I can watch the rest of the football game tonight with the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins.

First, pasting received emails is yet another violation of our rules.  Second, grow up.
