I agree Grofast, the Canadian military is very competant, and I sited the fact that the Canadian Airforce contingent in Europe regularly "won" the NATO exercises. I in no way wish to belittle the skill, bravery or dedication of our military. My point is that it is being wasted. Our old diesel subs may have given you a run for your money on exercises, but really what use are 4 subs to Canada. What use are 4 outdated and rapidly disintegrating subs to NATO? (we had to buy one just for spare parts because nobody makes them any more!!). I also understand why a country like the UK, France, Germany, etc would want as fully functional a military force as possible, they may very well end up fighting a war in which the US is not involved (any body who thinks the French have forgotten or forgiven three German invasions in the space of 70 years is crazy). But Canada? Can any body seriously say they could imagine Canada getting involved in a war that did not involve the US? If nothing else, you guys wouldn't let us. I just had a thought about our air force....I read somewhere that you guys are phasing out your A-10s. We should buy them all from you, and specialize our air force as a ground attack tactical air force. It would serve the alliance better than our present plan to attempt to afford some of your new F-35 fighters. our pilots would be just as skilled in an A-10 as in a CF-18. I guess the realpoint is that if Canada wants to be taken seriously in a military sense, then we need to rethink our entire defence strategy. And to those who objected to my retarded little brother remark, well thats the way I see it. We are the 2nd largest country on the planet, we have almost immeasurable resources (some estimates put our oil resources as greater than the Saudis'). Yet we have pitifully few people scattered along the very bottom strip of our country and almost nobody in the rest of it. We have aren't even a 3rd rate military power, yet we strut about as if we still had the punch we did in 1945 (when we had the 3rd largest navy on the planet). Our governments are so afraid to admit that our military really is made up of soldiers who kill rather than peacekeepers that during the bombing of Serbia they tried their best to suppress any mention in the press of the role played by Canadian aircraft. Canada has never lost a war (one of the few countries who can say that), yet we do not teach our children anything about our military past other than the Plains of Abraham and Vimy Ridge. We are a loose federation that is slowly becoming looser, our parliament contains a substantial number of members who's stated aim is to dismantle the country. Our whole country is bilingual except for the part where French is spoken....they barely tolerate English. Our head of state/C-in-C is a political appointee in a democratic country, yet that person is not the real head-of-state nor the real C-in-C...that is a foreign monarch who only visits occasionally. The provinces of Quebec and Ontario between them have a greater population than the rest of the country put together. The Nunavut Territory has 3 official languages. Speaking of the Territories, they are denied Provincial status on the basis of low population, yet PEI is a province in its own right...I could go on and on. Canada is a very weird place.
