Hippie you posted the following.

quote:

Surely you don't think that because we sometimes hit our own people, it means its not a problem when we hit yours. I just don't understand how what you wrote means anything. That we sometimes target wrong and hit our own people means?? Laughable?

How dare you suggest I think it is laughable?!?!?!

I never said you thought casualies were laughable. You said you didnt understand what i wrote, so I will try and clarify.

You said quite clearly that allied troops "frankly get in the way"  British and American forces ( and others ) have been fighting alongside each other for a hundred years, friendly fire can and does occur, often due to pilot or ground fire error. They can and do work perfectly well together considering the number of friendly fire incidents, to the number of missions undertaken. Hopefully you can see that it was the notion of us getting in the way which i referred to as laughable.

As for Panthers Claw, we will have to disagree. I still call the use of 4,000 troops with the associated air support as major combat. This figure doesnt include the US troops who were operating close by.

As for my smoking crack comment, I apologise.

In terms of an Integrated defense, if you just gave us fuel to help our military move it would be super helpfull. The reality is when the USA starts doing major combat operations, we really don't want any allies on the field. No offense, but you get in the way and it creates Friendly fire scenarios.

In light that Canadian military being allied with the US military and your opinion that you feel that the allies are in the way when the US launches a major combat situation: what would be a better option? Do you feel that us allies should avoid assisting in that manner and focus more on highly specialized operations?
In a way is is understandable that the US would have a greater military presence due to the US has placed a greater emphasis on being a superpower moreso then Canada. I also have to look at the fact that the population of Canada is roughly 26-27 million people whereas the US population is several times that amount, don't have your data handy at the moment. Thus the US has a greater pool of people to recruit into the military compared to us Canadians.

eta: as pointed out earlier, in many ways we do have a few aces up our collective sleeve and these being the vast mineral resources which are still being tapped. One which is the huge oil sands in Alberta which as technology improves, we will be able to extract more and more amount of crude oil. As well as the vast areas in the north which holds still undeveloped mineral bodies that we do know about yet the development is being placed on hold for the time being.

Bear, To answer your second question, Yes, much Like Arpig said in the OP.

Of course I understand why each nation wants to maintain a Navy, Airforce, and Army, but much of it is wasted duplication, as was noted in the OP. But it would make most sense for everyone in the Alliance to have a speciality and work together, we would all be stronger that way.

Politesub, I can see that I misread your laughable comment, So let me apologize for my reaction.

Let's have vigorous, reasoned, respectfull debates. (try to anyway, and call me on it, if I step out of line. that has happened a few times )

I am an Old school ASW type served in USN late 80s thru early 90s i had the privilage of participating in several combined execises with Canadian naval and air assets and i must say that they were top notch, we may have had better tech but thay haad mad skills and we learned alot from a coastally orinted navy. Even had priovilage of serving in a crew swap and did a week abord a canadian frigget, believe it was Arapaho. And let me tell you somthing abot those agging diesel boats they gave us a run for our money in every trackexersise we did agenst them. As far as soviet boats, the old joke was if you ever want to find a soviet submariner just turn off the lights they glow.

I agree Grofast, the Canadian military is very competant, and I sited the fact that the Canadian Airforce contingent in Europe regularly "won" the NATO exercises. I in no way wish to belittle the skill, bravery or dedication of our military. My point is that it is being wasted. Our old diesel subs may have given you a run for your money on exercises, but really what use are 4 subs to Canada. What use are 4 outdated and rapidly disintegrating subs to NATO? (we had to buy one just for spare parts because nobody makes them any more!!).

I also understand why a country like the UK, France, Germany, etc would want as fully functional a military force as possible, they may very well end up fighting a war in which the US is not involved (any body who thinks the French have forgotten or forgiven three German invasions in the space of 70 years is crazy). But Canada? Can any body seriously say they could imagine Canada getting involved in a war that did not involve the US? If nothing else, you guys wouldn't let us.

I just had a thought about our air force....I read somewhere that you guys are phasing out your A-10s. We should buy them all from you, and specialize our air force as a ground attack tactical air force. It would serve the alliance better than our present plan to attempt to afford some of your new F-35 fighters. our pilots would be just as skilled in an A-10 as in a CF-18. I guess the realpoint is that if Canada wants to be taken seriously in a military sense, then we need to rethink our entire defence strategy.

And to those who objected to my retarded little brother remark, well thats the way I see it. We are the 2nd largest country on the planet, we have almost immeasurable resources (some estimates put our oil resources as greater than the Saudis'). Yet we have pitifully few people scattered along the very bottom strip of our country and almost nobody in the rest of it. We have aren't even a 3rd rate military power, yet we strut about as if we still had the punch we did in 1945 (when we had the 3rd largest navy on the planet). Our governments are so afraid to admit that our military really is made up of soldiers who kill rather than peacekeepers that during the bombing of Serbia they tried their best to suppress any mention in the press of the role played by Canadian aircraft. Canada has never lost a war (one of the few countries who can say that), yet we do not teach our children anything about our military past other than the Plains of Abraham and Vimy Ridge. We are a loose federation that is slowly becoming looser, our parliament contains a substantial number of members who's stated aim is to dismantle the country. Our whole country is bilingual except for the part where French is spoken....they barely tolerate English. Our head of state/C-in-C is a political appointee in a democratic country, yet that person is not the real head-of-state nor the real C-in-C...that is a foreign monarch who only visits occasionally. The provinces of Quebec and Ontario between them have a greater population than the rest of the country put together. The Nunavut Territory has 3 official languages. Speaking of the Territories, they are denied Provincial status on the basis of low population, yet PEI is a province in its own right...I could go on and on. Canada is a very weird place.
