Interesting discussion. I knew for myself I'd moved past vanilla in general when I took a quiz in a women's magazine (I was getting color on my hair, and I was bored, okay?) and stuck on one question. "If you wanted to push the limits a little you'd....a) have sex outdoors; b)tie someone to the bed; c) wear a costume; d) try anal sex" . Because I realized that that question was about as pointless as "I'm going to push the limits today; normally I have the grilled chicken sandwich for lunch, but today, I'm going to have the fried chicken sandwich!" for me. All of them were liable to happen depending on the mood my then-boyfriend and I were in.
It has its shortcomings as a term, but it's useful as a very quick shorthand way to indicate that making your slave eat off the floor without using his hands or other highly overt power exchange stuff just isn't appropriate. Just as in other settings, I like to know when mundanes are going to be present so that I don't spend the evening boring people into tears with why I can't just use Homarus americanus to do a fourteenth century French brouet and the difficulty in finding cassia buds and did you SEE that dress that Baroness Thus-and-such wore to Coronation! (grin)
