Va. candidate distances self from college thesis

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia's Republican candidate for governor said Monday he no longer believes his argument in a graduate thesis written 20 years ago that discrimination against gays and other groups is acceptable for the benefit of straight, married couples.

Bob McDonnell's research paper, first reported Sunday by The Washington Post, shakes up what had been a smooth campaign. McDonnell has maintained a clear lead over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds in statewide polling.

In his first public comment on the 93-page conservative manifesto he wrote at the close of the Reagan presidency in 1989, McDonnell dismissed the paper as a long-ago academic exercise. He said life had moderated views he held then that government should "prefer married couples over cohabitators, homosexuals or fornicators." Working women and feminists were also a detriment to families, he wrote.

The treatise, titled "The Republican Party's Vision for the Family: The Compelling Issue of the Decade," singled out the Supreme Court's 1973 ruling legalizing abortion and a ruling the previous year that legalized contraceptives for unmarried people. McDonnell, a Roman Catholic, has said abortions should be performed only to save the life of the mother.

Deeds' campaign adviser Mo Elleithee said McDonnell was 34 and on the verge of running for the Virginia House of Delegates when he wrote the paper, and can't shrug it off as misguided youth.

However, McDonnell complained that Deeds' campaign was exploiting the thesis to suggest he supported workplace discrimination against women. He noted that his daughters have master's degrees and that the oldest had served with the Army in Iraq.

McDonnell described himself as a "college student at the time, albeit a little older college student, within an academic environment and completely not restrained by the real policy world at the time."

McDonnell wrote the thesis as a course requirement for his master's and law degrees from Regent University, the Christian college founded by religious broadcaster Pat Robertson. In it, he wrote that "If the government at all levels has a duty to uphold the family, then it follows that it has the authority to legitimately discriminate in support of this goal."

But heck, a lot of Democrats have been ribbed pretty hard about things they wrote while in school, so its a fair issue.


Technically having differnt tax schedules for married and unmarried people is a degree of Discrimination in this vein. And I support that. So I guess I accept the hypothetical premise that "Some discrimination" by the state in these matters is ok. Not punishing others, but giving married a boost. Like we do now and always have.

Another similar/related issue is should the state discriminate in favor of people with Children...Again, I say yes to a limited degree(and I have no kids)

I don't know enough about the guy to support him or not.

This sincere young man wrote an excellent essay exalting the virtues of traditional family life only to have the Hollywood media elite based in Washington try and drag his good name in the mud. Shame on them, shame on them.

Status: offline 		Got to say I've got no problem with him writing something then and changing his mind later. However his choice of college disqualifies him from public office, IMO, until he renounces the degree, the institution and its founder.

It's pretty moronic of some Republicans to argue against government's interference with public life at the same time as they preach in favour of the kind of legislation that interferes the most with people's privacy (you know the kind I mean).

If two adults want to sleep together what business is it of anyone else? They are "in the persuit of happiness."
This would also include things like "foreign aid", I don't want my government doing things like that "for" me.

Status: offline 		Republicans found out in the last two election cycles that Gays and Lesbians were outnumbering the religious right (Something folks on Collarme ought to be more aware of the anti-sex bias of the right wing) so they made a conscious choice to try to influence well to do gays (Log Cabin Republicans) to finally see if they can at least garner enough gay votes to bring the difference back to close to even.  It is a slippery slope though since so many on the Religious Right cannot abide any Gay issue including the simple right to be part of society.  Good luck Republicans you made too much political hay going against gays it will be a long bumpy road back!

Why?

Is there something so special about the state of marriage that benefits society enough to discriminate against those who are not married?

Isn't this similar to the many conservative arguments against any sort of welfare or social support?

Well I am republican and I am religous, but I honestly don't remember making hay to go against the gays. Are you sure you have your facts right?  I do remember a couple of weeks ago listening to a couple of religous types bashing gay marriage, but they were liberals. Where would they fit into the perfect little picture you have painted of the world?

Yea and we could split the democrats into two parties also....those who judge the whole group on the actions of some and the rest of those who actually see the world realistically. Then the first group can sit around and piss and moan about those awful right wingers and the second group might be able to actually accomplish something.

As to the "extremely silly" comment - that is a very accurate description of the left. There is nothing more silly than a party being led by clowns like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama. The leaders of the Democrat party are the biggest buffoons in history. And the next election cycle will reveal that America has woken up to this fact. Hopefully, we won't get hit with another terrorist attack before then, given the appeasement and limp-wristed approach of this administration towards REAL enemies.
Say what you will about George Bush, but he kept us safe for 7 years.

You can continue to fixate on the GOP if you want, but I suggest you take a good hard look at the eminent disaster that is the Democrat party. Obama's poll numbers are tanking almost daily, and Reid's and Pelosi's are in the teens. The economy began to tank around the time that Democrats took control of both houses, in 2006. That is not a coincidence. The stock market began to wobble and fall around the time that Obama became the presumptive nominee, falling from its high of around 14,000 to about half that. That's not a coincidence either. The stock market has recovered slightly since then, in spite of, not because of, anything the Democrats have done.

Oh, I love nothing more than a good spin. When the economy tanked, it was the fault of the Democrats in general and Obama in particular. When the economy recovers, it is in spite of Democrats and Obama. Yes, there's nothing like a bit of open mindedness in one's world view.

But, for those who want to, feel free to continue your "Republicans good. Democrats bad" world view. After all, what answers to complex questions could there be that can't be fit onto a fortune cookie?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...I'm Republican and conservative and I don't give a flying fuck if Bob wants to fuck Rob or if Judy wants to suck Trudy.  As for their being married, I see that as a religious problem they face...I have no problem with a civil union presided over by a Justice of the Peace---a government official---BUT if they can find a church that will marry them, have at it.  It doesn't interfere with my life and I'm all for happiness.  I don't believe in "abortion on demand" nor do I believe in it as a form of birth control and I do believe in the idea that somewhere along about the 3rd or 4th abortion provided at taxpayer expense to an unwed mother that someone should sit her down and say "Enough" but that doesn't mean that I don't believe in abortion as a viable necessity.  Tis the woman's body, not mine.  Her life, not mine.   But at some point in her life, she needs to be responsible for what she's doing and stop laying it off to someone else to pay for.
I believe in my taxes being used for whatever the government needs them for but I want them taken from me at the same rate that every one else's taxes are taken---if Joe Blow earns 10,000 gross and they take 10 % , then if I earn 75,000 gross I want them to take 10% and if Sandra Bullock earns 1,000,000 gross I want them to take 10% from her. 
So...does that fit your image of most Republicans?  Doesn't appear to.  Does that fit your image of most conservatives?  Doesn't appear to.  Am I wrong or are you stereotyping based on what you see in the news and hear from those on the left?  Goes to show that a person needs to listen to all sides and pick out the wheat from the chaff.

You do realize that Echelon started way back in the 60's, Carnivore, and Extraordinary Rendition all started under Clinton, & not Bush 2, and Obama continues to attack Pakistan, which had nothing to do with 9-11-01, but keep loving that good spin, but realize it's coming from your side as well.
