I am a gay sub male in Dallas. Because I can only barely meet my financial obligations, I will be moving from my own nice little apartment into an unfortunately decorated (pink *gag*) room located in a three bedroom house with a woman I grew up with, who is like a sister, and her boyfriend. They are straight and for the most part vanilla. I am not comfortable sharing my kinkiness with them. Has anyone here had a similar living situation, and could relate their experiences being kinky in a vanilla household?

I also have a collection of toys that will be making the move with me. In my current apartment I give them their own drawer, no lock. I don’t expect privacy to be an issue at all but I also expect that my housemates will find themselves in my room at some point. So, I need a toy box. I would like one with a lock but I was hoping someone could point out a good one online.

When I had to safety proof for my adult son, I bought a plastic bin that had handles with holes on the handles. I then put locks in them. For about thirty dollars, all was safe, water proof and no one noticed it or thought it might hold some dark secret.

Right now stores like Target, K-Mart and Wal-Mart have inexpensive foot lockers on-sale for the "back to school" crowd.

BDSM activities have a tendency to be somewhat noisier.  Expect to either address the issue of overnight guests right up front, or expect not to host any visitors.  Chances are, a lifelong friend close to you in age will be pretty accepting of your proclivities.

The metal foot locker's that I have seen were easily broken into. lol That's why I went with the plastic one. Mine was like an ice chest without the wall that made it one. Very sturdy and no one was getting into that without a lot of work. I think we found it at ace hardware.

As long as it is obvious I don’t want them in it I don’t think they will try to get in to my stuff. I love locks, but the most important features are size, and opaqueness.

I can have guys over. I just need to hang something on the door knob. And let the roommates know when someone is staying over. I plan to be kinky outside the house. I would hate to wake anyone up with my barking. :P

I picked up two rubbermaid like footlockers from home depot (could have been Lowes). Each was under $20 and they are designed to be locked with a padlock.

Not a toy box per se, but my main toybag is a 30" long rolling duffel bag I got at WalMart. The 2 main compartments have double zippers, so are easy to secure with padlocks. As a bonus, I don't have to unpack/repack when going somewhere with my toys. Just another option to think about.

the thing I like about the footlockers is that tehy can serve several purposes.. storage, table, seating....

Our stuff lives in a large suitcase under the bed. The feet of the bed are higher than normal which allows storage under. You can get 6" or 9" bed raisers at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

LillyoftheVally -> RE: New Roommates and Toy Boxes (9/2/2009 5:50:11 AM)

I have always lived with people not as active or not really at all involved with BDSM and have never had a problem, toys under the bed, they in't go searching and conversation as and when needed

subtlebutterfly -> RE: New Roommates and Toy Boxes (9/2/2009 8:48:27 AM)

I recommend a "trophy" wall[8D]

shadowowl -> RE: New Roommates and Toy Boxes (9/2/2009 10:43:36 AM)

I often use a suitcase with a lock though when I had to expand to 2 suitcases it started to get a little tricky lol.  and yes under the bed works good I've done that as well.
Another trick I have done is have a small case with things that are more regularly used and a bigger one for stuff that is only sometimes.

I was moving and I had a box I didn't want my mother snooping in when she was helping me move.  I labeled it "Sex Toys and Dildoes". She didn't snoop.

Snowstep -> RE: New Roommates and Toy Boxes (9/2/2009 10:43:54 PM)

I'v always used a toolbox. Easy to carry and almost all are designed to be locked.

I was living in a kink household once, so I had a trunk I labeled "Math and Physics textbooks". There was so much dust on that one, it was ridiculous.

OMG...I did the same exact thing when my Mother helped me move to the desert...I had about 6 boxes I labeled as Sex Toys...Clean...Sex Toys...Dirty....she was appalled...but she didn't snoop either!

Heeeheeeeheeeee...I'm 42 and still love to torment my Mother Unit...heeeeehhhheeeeehhheeee

LaTigresse -> RE: New Roommates and Toy Boxes (9/3/2009 1:22:54 PM)

There are a variety of inexpensive locking plastic bins at places like Walmart.

I just toss everything into the closet of the room we call my closet. If someone goes snooping and finds something, they deserve the embarrassment they are going to experience![:D]
