Esinn -> Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 10:42:00 AM)

Red Flag means caution.  So, the next flag displayed would be the black one - run like hell.

I am always concerned about people who immediately give me alternate email address.  I view it as a black flag.  Is this silly?  Should I reconsider?

If it is:
- Consider this my public apology to all those I have ignored.

I think the CM system works fine.  I can instantly view our conversation, their profile, blogs and any updates, I understand mail boxes get cluttered.  But to jump out immediately with an alt email just seems like they have a sales pitch which would violate TOS here.

The other side of CM is a social-sexual-networking system....  Email is part of that.

I also know CM does the best job they can to keep things ordered - even private messaging.  So, to jump to alt email addresses signals a black flag to me.  Do not get me wrong, I have received and valued personal emails.  It is when it is immediate without rational explaination.

LaTigresse -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 10:44:47 AM)

When I receive an email on the other side, from someone I have not had previous contact with, that contains an email/chat ID, usually yahoo, I delete it without any response at all.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 10:45:05 AM)

I tend to look at immediate alternate emails as either a desperate attempt at more contact than I care for, or as a front for a scam. I will get to know someone on here, and then if things are going well the next step is a private email. I dont like giving someone I do not yet know that much access to me. The same with immediate off-CM instant messengers. And you sure as hell wont be getting my phone number in your first few messages. Those subs who do toss this to me, right off, strike me as manipulative, since they all but come out and say they wont be looking on here anymore so if I want to contact them use that. I dont want to contact them that much that I would use my personal email to find them.

I think all of the first cmails containing contact emails I've received have been from people using from letters sent out via some kind of automated system.

It does not concern me much as I've just come to assume those kinds of cmails don't go anywhere anyway.

Phoenixpower -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 10:55:07 AM)

Whilst I do agree on the views so far I do chat with the person, IF there is some form of interest from my side to get to know the person...but IF he is obviously not what I am looking for (e.g. due to being too young for what I am looking for, wrong country, etc) then I am not bothered to accept a chat with him as uni and work keep me busy enough and at times makes it already hard enough to find the time to chat with the guys I am interested in getting to know.

If I reply to him and explain it to him that he is not from my interest depends on the way how I get this email...nice decent approach triggers a reply, rude one triggers either not to reply or to give him my attitude before I block and delete him. If it just looks like a normal spam email, then I ignore it.

Recently I sold my upgrade phone on ebay where one person asked me if it would be ok for me when he picks it up in person...whilst I wasn't so keen on it I agreed to it after a discussion with a friend about that option. However, following that he asked me to call him or to give him my phone number, where I declined and informed him that I don't disclose such details until the phone is won by him. I have no interest of someone getting on my nerves about it or even trying to figure out where that one is. Thankfully at the end it got sold to someone else and I posted it as it was planned.

Oh I thought you meant Alt as in Alt dot com
It depends on how conservative/desperate you are but you can get cock-cunt-couples-complicated there within 24 hours no email required.

RavenMuse -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 11:07:27 AM)

The memo system here works just fine. If they are trying to get Me straight to messanger or alternate email then I delete and block, chances are it is some bullshit scammer.

GraciousLady -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 11:13:57 AM)

I have several email addresses. One is for work, one is personal and one is for potential subs or spam/junk mail producing internet activities. If the sub and I hit it off they get my personal e mail address like my other friends. My alt e mail adress is to protect my personal one from spam and crazies. I do see the OP's point though. Whatever works to keep you safe and spare you the crap that gets thrown at us.

leadership527 -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 12:05:11 PM)

I dunno Esinn. I myself much prefer the better editing and formatting control I have over email. But I never just open up with an email address. It's always cmails first. Then, if it seems valuable, I'll suggest but not push for swapping over to email. I have to admit, if I just got a cmail cold with an email in it, I'd almost certainly ignore the email address and respond as I saw fit to the rest.

Falkenstein -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 12:25:56 PM)

Pardon my ignorance, but what is an alternate email?

Kinky regards

And that's why I simply report them as spam and move on.

littlewonder -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 5:18:35 PM)

I never saw alternate emails as a flag of any kind. To me it just meant that maybe they didn't visit CM all that often enough to check email but still wanted to get the benefits of meeting and getting to know other people through an email that they check often.

YoursMistress -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/2/2009 11:47:58 PM)

People also may not be able to visit CM at work during the day due to restrictions on business networks and might be more responsive to hotmail, gmail, etc..  I don't think it's necessarily a caution flag.

Yep.

Unless it's an obvious scammer (yanno.. "I search a God fearing man/woman for love forever." Or " I have been left shitloads of money in an account that only YOU can help me access"  )  LOL

Fnordstrum -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/3/2009 5:52:46 AM)

If someone starts with an alternate email, that could be a sign of a potential scammer/whatever, but it also could just mean they don't check collarme often, or aren't able to get on it all the time (say, from work), or etc.... Really you would need to take it in context, as in... What the heck is the content of the email. Usually if someone's some kind of scammer or whatever it will be pretty easy to tell, email address or not.

Then starting with an instant messenger name of whatever kind, I don't see as being a caution flag at all.. I know I much prefer talking to people using AIM/Yahoo/whatever instead of with mails, because mails are just slower. So basically, if I'm going to be talking to someone (If they actually want to talk to me of course), it might as well go to IMs right away (unless they don't like IMing for whatever reason of course), so I don't see why it would hurt to say this is my screen name, feel free to IM me if you want. I mean, if you don't want some random person getting your screen name right away, you could either just say that or just say you prefer mails or just message back on the site and not IM them -- But in any case, I don't really get that as being a 'caution' flag.

Really what it boils down to, is not if they give an alternate contact, but, what the message content is... If it seems like a pretty spammy/scammy message and has another mail address or screen name in there which they insist you contact, vs if it seems like an actual message from someone who just likes to use a different contact method or can't/doesn't get on collarme all the time. (Also reading their profile could help if you aren't sure if they seem spammy or not) -- In any case, just the presence of an alternate mail or an IM screenname doesn't really mean anything. (Especially an IM name as mail is similar enough to Collarme messages that there are fewer reasons to switch to using actual email)

Fnord.

Personally I don't see it as a red flag unless its in the first message *and* that message is kind of spammy. For example 'hi, contact me at this email address and we'll talk more' and similar messages. As for alt emails, theres nothing odd about that in general. Personally I have seperate email addresses for msn and my regular email account and half a dozen staff/admin related email accounts for my company and another site I run. I just have them because they're necessary, it doesn't mean its a red flag.

^ This.

Alt email accounts don't neccesarily mean "zomg spammer!".

I have 2 emails - my "normal" yahoo account, and my personal website/business (computer repair) account. (I should also note that I use the website account to mail out my resume. Some prospective employers may frown upon a resume coming from something like yankeesfan1981 *at* yahoo/gmail/msn.com )

Personally, I think Cmail is fine for starting off. (Like another poster mentioned)  It lacks several features that are readily available in mail clients, (specifically, file attachments.).  For example, my profile says that I remix music. With that said, on occasion someone may come across my profile and be interested in hearing one of my productions.

Cmail doesn't allow for attachments, and links are somewhat chancy with the spam filtering. So, I'd ask for an offsite email.

Also, there's the "SFW" factor (safe for work).

VanIsleKnight -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/15/2009 1:17:56 AM)

Personally I have a few e-mail accounts.  One is work related, one I have had since I was in my early teens, and another I use as my "internet screen".  This is mostly due to the knowledge that it doesn't take a lot of internet research to find out where I live, where I work, who my friends and family are, and to be frank... after receiving a phone call at 3 AM from a jackass with more issues then I ever had or ever will have was more then enough reason for me to use a secondary, safe e-mail account.

Since then I've tried to clean up my internet tracks and not be a complete moron and post my personal information all over the place, so it's a lot harder now, but seriously.  You only need one scare, and I doubt that I've gotten everything.

redheadeddom -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/15/2009 1:28:51 AM)

I don't like the CM system one bit. The way it poorly formats past emails, the lack of control I have over the formatting of the messages I'm sending, a hundred other reasons... and, on top of that, I'm unable to send CM messages from my phone's browser. So I have a great many reasons for wanting to switch from cmail to email as soon as possible.

At the same time, I would never give someone my email in the first message I sent them, if only because I'm aware that looks scam-ish. So I suffer through the clumsy cmail interface for at least the first several messages.

thishereboi -> RE: Alt Email Addresses(A black flag)? (9/15/2009 4:59:28 AM)

Your going to be shocked to hear this, but I agree with you. If someone cmails me and asks me to write back on an outside email, I ignore them. I see nothing wrong with cm's mail system and see no need to go elsewhere. Now after I get to know them, I may switch, but until then I don't.
