The Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund filed suit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Boise on behalf of Nampa Classical Academy in Idaho.

The charter school is scheduled to open Sept. 8 and had planned to use the Bible as a primary source of teaching material, but not to teach religion.

The Idaho Public Charter School Commission said last month that the school couldn't use the Bible because the state constitution "expressly" limits use of religious texts.

The Alliance Defense Fund says the school has a statutory right to choose its own curriculum and the Bible shouldn't be singled out for censorship.

Are we going too far, or, not far enough?

How can a school use the Bible "as a primary source of teaching material"? It's terrifying that they even thought of it in the first place. We're in the XXIst Century! For crying out loud...

Looks like a helluva school devoted to "a secular classical liberal arts" education. I didn't see anything about the Bible on its website at all, let alone as "a primary source of teaching material".

Yep. Perhaps they keep their bias well-hidden, I don't know.

In any event, the point is moot: they're not allowed to use the Bible as a means to indoctr... sorry, to teach their students

I was expecting to see it listed as, perhaps, part of the lit education... it is a great piece of literature. however, the absence of any mention has even my liberal heart freezing a bit.

Well actually, a competent literary study of the Bible would go a long way toward evaporating the notion that it is a coherent whole which comprises the inspired Word of (a single) God.

Sure - just don't use the Bible as a "primary source of teaching material". Know what I'm saying?

Besides, considering that many students are barely literate, a comparative literary study of this compilation of myths and legends might be overreaching a bit.

Maybe if the Bible were discussed openly it wouldn't be so easy for cults to convert curious youngsters.

Gee, where have we heard that kind of reasoning before?

Anyway, it sounds like a great school, it's just down the road from me, and there is a very short waiting list.

I'm filling out an application for my UM tonight. I didn't even realize it was there until just now... the things you can learn on collarchat are amazing sometimes!

Actually, not wanting to sound contrary or anything, but it seems to me like there is an overexposure to the Bible, not the other way around. Perhaps putting a lid on it for a while wouldn't be a bad thing - it is a religious text after all.

As for discussing anything and everything in an academic setting, true enough, but again, let's not forget the relative stupidity of the average school student

The Bible at one point was used in Public Schools. It says they are trying to be a "classical" school, right? This is a Charter School, so all the kids there are going to be bright, motivated, and have their parents involved in their education. It will be an education modeled on the one that Abe Linchongot (though hopefully updating the science ciriculum). Who could be against that?

Personally, I think there should just be Vouchers for all, with extra $ for at risk kids.

Drop all the lawsuits, and put the money into educating kids. But of course that isn't going to happen. Lawyers and Unions want thier Cash and Power.

I am not a religious person by any definition but it sounds to me like the Idaho Constitution needs some editing. Talk about zealots.
