Like I've said before we need a seperation of big business and state as well as church and state.
The Lobbyists on K street even have a term for it; "mining the taxpayers!"

And some people wonder why I hate the partisan crap that is argued about on these forums, and in this country. it is because it is the great manipulation created by the ruling class of the politicians and corporatist.

You're right, of course.

It'll be interesting to see if this post falls off page one like a lead balloon from this point forward, since it doesn't give the partisans any ammo against each other.

In the end, the sheeple will get the government they deserve.

A fair amount of truth in that subfever.

What burns me is that I don't think of myself as being one of the sheeple yet I am a victim of the government that THEY deserve.
(I'll not go into great detail about how and why I don't consider myself to be a "sheeple." I'll only say I've been litigating for almost 2 years, and likely have another 2-4 years of litigation before I'm done. I am attempting, as a pro se litigant, to write new law in my home state.)

A side point, granted--but it's always been that way, often much, much more egregiously, right from Colonial times.

Not that we shouldn't address it, but it's difficult, as they have so much influence. Roosevelt and Taft helped some, the creation of a few regulatory agencies helped some, but that kind of incentive and economic resources will yield considerable influence.

We life in a capitalist nation. That means people with the capital hold the economic--and political power. Changing that will mean lessening the purely capitalist mindset so many cling to.

And those changes will predictably--as past and current changes have and do--bring cries of "Socialism!" inspired by those wishing to cling to their economic and political dominance.

One of those "can't have it both ways" scenarios.

Hiya Tim,

Actually a seperation of rights, from those that individuals have, and those that are granted to business entities will go a long way to fixing these problems. It has less to do with capitalism, as it does the application of rights as applied to business entities. It is obvious to many that the rights of an individual should come before the rights of a business entity, but that is not always the case, and many say that having a different priority for both sets of rights, is akin to socialism, which is utter BS.

Several of the founding fathers, especially Jefferson, saw what was coming with the power of corporations. They warned against this. That tells me right there that it was never their intention to give many of our individual constitutional rights to business entities.

Hi Orion,

True. Washington warned against political parties too--no one listened to him either.

In the 19th century, a very conservative court (the same one as the Dred Scott decision) actually ruled that corporations were persons under the law, and subject to protection as a person under the Constitution (I forget which exact Amendment was the issue in that case)!

Bad as things are, they've been worse. I do hope we don't let them get worse again.

I haven't looked at that issue for quite some time, and was never well versed or knowledgeable about it, but I think it is the 14th Amendment.

Yes! That's it! "Equal protection under the law," considering corporations as people under the terms of the 14th Amendment.

As noted, granting corporate entities the same power granted to individuals under the 14th Amendment is certainly a large part of the problem.

I also understand that for over two decades now, corporations have had the power to patent life itself. Tim makes some interesting points, and expresses hope that things don't get worse. The direction we seem to be headed towards does seem foreboding, however.

I have to agree that this is far more of a class issue than a partisan issue.

Before a solution to the problem emerges, it seems that the masses will need to first agree upon what the problem actually is. What are the most effective methods to move towards this direction?
